Because of something I wrote in another thread got me thinking.

What smells do you really love and hate? Not obvious ones like manure etc. but smells that tie into your childhood or good/bad moments in your life.

For me I love the smell of Wrights Coal Tar Soap because it reminds me of one of my sets of Grandparents and going on holiday with them to the New Forest in the long hot summer of '76

I can not stand the smell of the draw used to store veg in freezers, when I was younger I worked in a supermarket filling the freezer section and the veg was always the last job and I just came to resent the whole thing and the smell brings back the bad memories of it:(

hate the smell of coffee

Coffee is nasty, followed by cigarette smoke. Both are worse when they are stale.

Also so many perfumes, especially the "flowery" ones that older people wear, usually enough to burn your nostrel hair off when they walk past.

Good:

Creosote
Tar
Petrol
Bacon
Fresh brewed black coffee - memories of the head of sixth form's office, spent too much time in there...
Freshly baked bread
Cut grass - childhood summer memories of being at home, old man cutting the grass on a Sunday before the GP.

Bad:

Beef mince browning - Shepherd's Pie being made after school.

Love the smell of wood that has been cut with a power saw, cant stand the smell of cabbage when its cooking.

Love: the smell of either aveda or lush conditioners, estee lauder miracle because it smells like my mum, farenheit as it smells like my dad, wet cut grass as it reminds me of being a kid at my grandparents house. Also that smell of damp wood reminds me of being a kid as well - like the kind of wood you get in those little playhouses/shed things in the garden.

Hate: Petrol, marmite, ooh freezer drawers yes that is sick, farts, sambuca (or anything aniseed for that matter).

Love:

Fireworks, the wax they used to use on the wooden floors of old school halls, freshly rained-on pavements, sun-baked cat fur, lilies in full indolic bloom, christmas trees, the musty wood you get in Welsh chapels, creosote, sandalwood.

Hate:

Wet dog. Old sports changing rooms.

RC nitro! Love it :D

As for hate... I don't know what it was but when I was ~15 I was fishing when I noticed a terrible smell coming from a tar-like smudge on my wader. For years afterwards whenever I thought about it I could smell it and it would make me feel ill.
