Dont think this should be in the Mobile section but someone no doubt will dissagree :p

The contract phones are for the sim, yes?
Say say i got a contract phone, for £15 a month and the Phones payg value was £100-£150 say.
What would stop me selling the phone for £100-£150 and popping the contract sim in my unlocked phone i have just now and using the money from the phone for my monthly payments?

Might be £270 all in at the end of the 18 months just £150 odd off that is a good bit.

Might be my stupidity, missing something simple, but could this work/anyone ever done it?

Nothing to stop you (except their terms and conditions probably). But they won't know. Surely the extra £ you are paying over a sim only contract over the 18 months is more than the phone is worth

Nothing to stop you at all, I've done it before when there's been nothing I fancied for upgrade; just see what's selling for most at the time and get that instead, either keep my old handset, or wait till something I like comes along.

Planning to do this now. Had no idea there was any kind of issue with it? I assumed the phone is now mine to keep so can do with it what I like?

Is this not the case? Should I be keeping the phone? As in, would it be violating the T&C's in case something goes wrong?

My dad used to code the back end of the old Pre Pay system for o2 and let me tell you the mobile phone companies know exactly what phone you are actually using and can triangulate your location within 3meters I think it is.

But saying that they aren't going to care if you use the phone that was supplied with the initial contract or not. At the end of the day, if you were to use the phone supplied with the cost of the contract itself you end up paying for the handset about 3 times.
Not so much these days but certainly was the case a few years ago.

Just did this last month. Signed a 2 year deal with orange and put the SIM in my iphone as I didnt think the upgrade from 3G to 3GS was worth either £90 or £180.

Gave the new handset to my partner who is on PAYG and we also got a free Nintendo Wii from the warehouse.

All in all she got a £200 handset in pink as a massive upgrade for her, free nintendo wii with wii sports and wii sports resort and I am paying exactly the same amount as I was before.

I even have full 3G coverage working and the handset has everything except visual voicemail.

Have you only just realised this?

Not as if its a new idea  , been doing it for years.

And yes this should be in Mobiles.

Seems pointless, go sim only, with O2 you get cashback too through quidco.

Depends as you get better deals on contract.

I had 1100 minutes and texts per month for £21 per month and sold my new upgrade phone for £250 as I was fine with my old one and there was nothing new I fancied. My gf did even better. She sold her upgraded HTC for £400 on Ebay and her monthly tariff for 600 mins plus 300 texts and free landline calls went down to £20 per month as a loyalty bonus (she was with them 9 years). Even though her new contract was for 18 months she actually gets paid £40 to have all those free minutes and texts.

Tell me where I can get a PAYG sim card for 16 pence per month giving me 1100 minutes and texts or somebody who will pay my gf £2.22 a month to have their sim card and 600mins,300 texts and free landline calls?

Read your terms and conditions which will say something like 'The mobile equipment you have is supplied outside the terms and conditions of your contract'.
