This is probably a silly question, but would a microwave oven damage a rechargeable battery?

Tried looking on Google but found nothing.

Yes... it's got bare metal in/on it... Microwaves don't like metal.

Although I haven't tried it so don't have conclusive proof.

Edit... I'm assuming your are putting the battery in the Micro... I could be completly wrong in that case.

The battery in question has been resting on top of the microwave for 1 year +.

And now the life of the battery is VERY VERY poor.

Is it the older type of rechargeable?, if so then you may have encountered the Memory Effect when it will not take a full charge anymore. They should be kept fully charged, and sometimes fully discharged before a re charge

Yes, absolutely, but only if you put it in the microwave. It'll be fine on top.

Sitting around doing nothing is often bad for rechargeable batteries.

Well one battery is actually two. :o

I put my mobile, wallet and car key on the microwave when I'm home. My mobile battery is knackered in my C902 and now the battery in my other car key (a BMW one with in built battery which charges when you drive), is also not holding charge.

I went for a drive last night to charge said battery and it worked fine, but this morning only had limited range.
