Hi guys

im very intrested in learning web design its somthing i have always wanted to have a go at doing but never really thought i was good enough to do it.

i have a reasonable understanding of computers now and having just completed a home pc build i am full of enthusiasm to see what else i can achive.

i have a full time demanding job so im looking to learn either in an evening locally (in the Hull area) or one of those learn at your own pace things from home these are expensive so i want to make sure im looking at a good comprehensive course that will allow me to produce a quality end result.
i would also like the course to leave me with a decent reconised qualification.

i have seen this http://www.icslearn.co.uk/distance-learning-web-design/

what are your thoughts i am aware of html and css ect but thats about were my knowledge stops.

i would greatly appreaciate any input from you guys.

Personally I think web design is a skill that cannot really be taught, you either have a flair for design or you don't - my first full time job was as a web designer and I sucked :). Thankfully sites back then generally looked terrible so I got away with it but it's something that I found uninteresting and more importantly unsatisfying.

If you do decide to go the web design route then stay clear of any distance learning courses. As I have mentioned previously here the CIW certification is one pursued by few and recognised by fewer still, if I recall the course is extremely dated and lacks information of many fundamental principles whilst including subjects which aren't at all relevant. There is a vast repository of tutorials and templates you can learn from available online and using these as a starting point is your best bet. That way you can see if you're any good at it and if you're really going to get any fulfillment from doing it professionally. Furthermore a good portfolio and a natural ability will do you far, far, far, far (apologies for the overstatement) more good than any web design certification.

Thanks for the info guys

il make a start this weekend going through a tutorial on html and see how i get on.

thanks for the links steve-h

What is the difference, i'm a luddite

Web Design is all about the presentation; layout, typography, colours, content flow, inter-page navigation, image and form placement, and interactivity.

For want of a much better phrase [because it's so often misused], it's about the 'look and feel' of a site.

A designer would ask "Do I put the navigation at the top, down the side, or is there an even better solution?"

Web Development is about creating and manipulating the code that tells browsers how to show the design as intended.

A developer would ask "Do I use an unordered list, definition list, individual DIVs or something else to get the navigation looking and acting the way the designer wants it?"

That's a very basic overview, from a designer. Let's see what a developer suggests :D

I would say that it's easier to learn development than it is to learn design, and I don't mean that as a slight to developers - I've had to learn C in my dim and distant past, so I know it's far from easy! It's just that development deals with a more objective topic than design, and as such it's easier to teach over the internet.

Ive looked at learning we b development many times however i struggle to find it enjoyable.. I think i much prefer playing with the level editiors with fps games etc.

Web designers are the useless ones, and web developers the useful ones. simples.

Rubbish.

Website Designers put together the website taking into consideration all of the needs and purposes of the website. They have to design the website in such a way that it is easy to use, looks good and has space for information.

Website Developers need to build the website as specified. They need to build the website in a browser friendly manner, making their code efficient etc. Developers may also need to speak to designers to ensure that everything is as they want. Developers may even question elements as developers have extensive knowledge of web usability etc.

Website designers and developers both have very important roles. They also need to work together.

Absolutely, I wouldn't know what to do if a "web designer" didn't inform me where to put shiny buttons on my web pages.

How best to illustrate the need for web designers?

Look at and use the websites of web developers. :p

i want to be able to produce my own web pages to a reasonably proffessional standard i think the tutorials provided for me before the designer and developement argument seemed to kick off are very usuful thankyou again for the links.

any more constructive ideas on how i can learn or sources of infomation would be greatly appreaciated.
