Nokia N900

Anyone finding real issues? The only thing I have found is that, on the odd occasion, a re-start is required - off then on, generally if I install a big update. Liking the regular updates on all of the software, some of the software has really improved over time.

As an experiment, I gave my phone to one of my technophobe mates, who is stuck in 1982 and he found it easy enough to navigate with basic instructions, tho I can see why it would be difficult to use repositories etc

Another thing i installed is Stellarium, came as a debian package, that on the other hand was a lot more intimidating to install via termial, as opposed to app manager, however i got it working and got the required dependancies for it all via terminal.

I have to say that terminal starts to make a whole lot of sense once you've used it a few times, now I'm playing with the idea of having another blast at linux on my desktop pc.

Well my N900 arrived today as a replacement for the HTC touch Diamond I've had for the past 18 months.

Nokia Case on order from play.


Any Screen Protectors recommended by anyone? This is the first phone I've bought sim free, and dont want to scratch the hell out of it early on!
 
I have to say I am finding the most under-rated thing about this phone to be the camera.

It is an absolutely excellent camera, it wipes the floor with the iPhone/Hero and so on.

The video camera is very good quality also, looks far better than any other phone I have used (95% of them) :p

I'm genuinely surprised more people aren't mentioning the camera, it really is superb!

Still very pleased with mine, excellent bit of kit :D
 
Can't see much difference quality wise between the camera and the one on my N95 8gig, but always thought that was superb anyways!

Real test will be this weekend as i'm doing a ton of miles so will be thrashing it!

Sure hope the charger 'adaptor' will allow me to charge it in my car using my N95 car charger! :D

Well coming from an iphone, I love the n900. It syncs well with my mail and webpages are a joy to browse. The hardware keyboard (whilst being small) is really good. Provided they keep the support going then this could really take off. It's a lot more in depth than the iphone. My wife loves the iphone for ease of use, but can't get her head around the N900.

It just needs some more polished apps, themes and games and it'll be awesome.

I think having an n900 would annoy me with not having an app for everything. For instance I use Flixster, Wikipanion, Units and the Engadget app daily and I'm not sure if the n900 has equivalents?

Suit yourself, no one is forcing you to buy anything. Like I said before, this isn't really a product for someone who wants a toy but never heard of Linux before. Stick with iphone mate. Its the same hardware, but the OS is retarded enough for users not to care.

This. I don't need a facebook widget for my laptop, nor do I need a wiki app or such-like. The same goes for the N900 - it has a full, proper browser. Apple have brainwashed their white, wooly followers into the whole culture of 'I need an app for that'....''taking a dump? there's an app for that, but don't forget the ass-wiping app or you'll need skidremove'' You didn't need an app for that on your PC, you don't need one for your phone. An app is essentially the website, but not as good.

Feeds etc are all generally available, lots of good software as well with the N900, so it is a choice between 000's of apps or something significantly closer to a finished product out of the box, that can actually do things itself without loads of stuff wedged in.

love n900, some few emu working, rss feeds (dont normally use on pc), emails, msn, fb widget. need few more basic things to make it bit better, maybe email widget, proper data log widget/app (for mobile data, there is a basic widget).

sold my n97 for n900 and feels so much better

I'm pretty comfortable with nix/BSD on an admin level so I'm hardly a consumer who's 'never head of Linux'.

I've just ordered myself an N900 from Nokia Retail on the £30/month, 24Mth, 300 min/unlimited text+net :D

EDIT: Anybody know if the N900's from Nokia Retail are vanilla flavour?

yes it will be vanilla, the one i got from vodafone is vanilla too.


Also i need some help i installed a app called easy dabian chroot for my n900 but decided not to use untill i get a microSD card to install the image, so uninstalled it but it left a app icon "close debian" when i click on it it just closes but how do i delete or uninstall this?

its not in app manager and i'm a linux n00b
 
I'm thinking of picking one of these up tomorrow, has anyone managed to haggle successfully with carphone warehouse?

I'm planning to go in with a screen grab of the £30 / month contract from MPD for 300 mins, unlimited txts and 500mb data with 3 months insurance and just tell them if they can best that they have a sale.

Download the .deb here Stellarium

Assuming you already have the stellarium package (stellarium_0.10.3r4182-1_armel) in your downloads folder, here's what I did to get it all working finally:

1.) Go to Applications Manager --> UnInstall and make sure there is not a copy of Stellarium installed. If so, uninstall.

2.) Enable Extras-Devel Repository (proceed at your own risk)

3.) In Terminal as root, run:

apt-get install libqt4-maemo5-core libqt4-maemo5-opengl libqt4-maemo5-network libqt4-maemo5-gui libqt4-maemo5-script libqt4-maemo5-svg libqt4-maemo5-test libqt4-maemo5-xml libqt4-maemo5-dbus libgles1 libgles1-sgx-img libgles2 libgles2-sgx-img opengles-sgx-img-common

4.) cd MyDocs/.documents/downloads

5.) dpkg -i stellarium_0.10.3r4182-1_armel.deb

Bingo! Should work after that. Remember to un-enable Extras-Devel when you're done.

It also works a whole lot better if you dont make a typo, I did, had me scratching my head for a few mins. :p
