HGV1 Driver Earnings

The rates pretty much depend on where you live, how much experience you have and who you work for.

Near me Greggs (the bakers) pay 30K a year for Class 1 drivers and that seems to be considered about right. Most places like Stobarts pay an hourly rate still so if you do long hours the pay is good.

Did my HGV C+E (Class 1) last year and love it to bits, easy stress free job.

I work for an agency and have a long term contract with a small firm trunking a double deck trailer 5 nights a week. The pay isn't brilliant but I drive for just 4 hours and spend a lot of of my 9 to 10 hour shift parked up waiting to be called in to be loaded. It's a good job and fingers crossed it will become permanent in the future.

A lot of companies will not employ you until you have a couple of years experience under your belt.

I am collecting quite a few Nectar points filling the wee beastie up.

There is a guy on here who works for Eddie Stobart and says he gets paid £6.50-£7.50 an hour.

It's about £9 an hour near me but they work long hours so it adds up at the end of the week.

£7.10 p/hr 6AM - 6PM £8.10 p/hr 6PM - 6AM (Day & Night rate)

Saturday is £9.50p/hr day rate (00:01 - 15:00), £11p/hr Night rate.(15:00 - 06:00)

I think Sunday is £11p/hr but not sure as I don't work Sundays....

If you put the hours in, you can earn reasonable money. My Gross last years was just shy of £32k.

This was precisely my point, does this not seem awfully convoluted given that similar money can be earnt in say...a basic office admin position or even retail, which wouldn't need to be any more than half a mile from home with nice little tea breaks and never a night away?

Always thought that I'd enjoy this for a few months, but there's no point getting all the qualifications and only doing it for a short period. Don't think I could do it as a career or long term though

Given that a person whom actually does this for a living has divulged his hourly rate right here, i don't think so. That is not much different to the hourly rate to that of an office admin (or even higher end retail).

trouble is office/retail is usually 12-17k for low level stuff. A lot of the office stuff have no chance at overtime. Retail you can usually get some. But physical type jobs you can usually get pretty much, as much overtime as you want.

Off course you have a point but maybe he enjoys driving trucks? Sometimes there is more to a job than just money.

My father used to work for a company (Croomes) and used to drive around most of Western Europe, going with him for 4-6 weeks in the summer when I was a youngster was awesome :) Downside though, he was away for long periods of time :(

They varies wildly, there are some firms who pay very little and some firms that pay a lot.
Average pay for a class 1 is mid to high 20's KPA.
Tanker drivers of any description will get more.

For me, even when I was a professional driver Artic driving has never been a worthwhile option, I got paid near enough the same amount as they earn for driving a 3.5t doing multidrops (best year was £27500 driving a van).
As it stands I get paid the same amount now for driving a reach truck around a cold store and doing a bit of dispatch admin and shunting on the side (£9.89 P/h 1.5X for overtime) as someone who has to **** around wrestling a artic around all day.

How much does mutli-drop pay on average out of interest ??

The likes of TNT/Parcel Force etc etc
