i7 or Core 2 Quad?

Ok so I am contemplating on upgrading my CPU and GPU mainly, only issue is because I run a P35 mobo which is capable of running:

Would it be worth getting this CPU and saving myself the money to get a new motherboard, ram etc, or should I upgrade to an I7, Ideally im aiming to run BF bad company well enough, but I am kinda lost. So if anyone could kindly point me in the right direction to a CPU upgrade of what is good and what is not. only issue is I can't afford to spend a godly ammount hehe.
 
an i5 will be more than enough for gaming.
the 775 socket is still plenty good enough, but leaves you with nowhere to go really, so spending a fortune on a cpu isnt always ideal, if you can get one second hand then well worth it still as there is still life left in them. but i def wouldnt go i7 for gaming only.

It all depends on how much you want to spend and what the rest of your system is.

The easiest would be to just get a core2 quad and o/c it.

If you want a new system, consider the i5 or an amd system.

Go for an i7 if you have more than 500£ to spend.
 
You haven't mentioned what graphics card you have - balancing the cpu and gpu is an important decision in price/performance upgrades.

I would look for a used Q6600 for around £85

Alternatively a 4ghz i3 530 can be had for around £265 for new mobo chip and ram.:cool:

Currently got an 8800 GT, going to be upgrading to a 5870 in the next months, thing is I looked around and i'm hearing a lot of mixed thought, that the LGA series still are strong and i7 is overkill atm. Im looking for a system really that will last this years games and wait till the end of the year for a system overhaul, hence investing in a somewhat cheap graphics card and a minor dual to quad core upgrade.
 
this years games, and probably atleast next years, if not 2012 games too, the 775 QC are fine, likewise most of the newer DC 775s. i wouldnt recommend going as high as an i7, aim for an i3 or i5, or even amd but my knowledge on them is poor, if you want to do a full upgrade, and spend the money you save on an i7 build for something more usefull.

You are adding the price of a 5870, a decent cpu cooler and most likely a 500W+ PSU (if you do not already have one). So it's a fairly sizeable budget upgrade if you are doing all of it at once. It's no longer a minor overhaul.

Already got a OCZ 600 watt psu, regarding a cooler I don't think that would add a huge amount would it?, however the ati card will be a gift for my bday hehe xD but yes I see your point.
