Just ordered a fair amount of cable sleeving from MDPC and it got me thinking...
In order to sleeve the cables I'll have to DC them from my system :( (duh)

I'll probably end up doing it in stages, so how long does it take to sleeve say a 6pin PCI-E cable?

Thanks :)

I managed to get my entire system done in a weekend, but it is a very time consuming job. Worst part is getting the cables out of the connectors, first few will take a while until you find a way that works for you, and then its not too bad.

Once you've got the hang of it I'd say PCI-E power cable should take 15 mins or so. I found it handy to cut the heatshrink to size before hand and just have a tub full of pieces so I wasnt cutting that as well as the braid all the time. Same with the braid, Cut one piece for the cable your doing, and if its the right length, use it as a guide to cut 5 more (in the case of the PCI-E cable).

Do you have a modular PSU? If so you can sleeve V easily one at a time. When you stat off it will take you about 15 mins per cable, not including the time it takes to get your self all set up etc. As you get better you'll get it down to the 5 min mark. I recommend using heat shrink on the ends rather than tape and using a hairdryer to shrink it rather that matches or lighters as it's much safer and easier.

If you have a non modular PSU it's easier and quicker to take it out and do all the ones you want to together, you can also bundle together all the cables you don't want.

Like Ducky has already stated, sleeving cables is really time consuming.

When I first started doing my PCIe cables from my Be Quiet PSU, I spent over an hour just trying to depin the first bloody cable!!!

The pins on the Be Quiet are a lot stronger than the Akasa 24-pin extension, for the 24-pin it probably took me about 2 1/2 to 3 hours to do the entire thing, it was a doddle to depin this extension.

I'm not to handy with electrics, so the way I did my cables was to remove 1 wire at a time, sleeve it, then stick it back into the plug, and then remove the next one, I've seen people removing all of the wires at the same time, but I know if I were to try this, I'd put them back into the wrong place, even if I did label them!!!

@G-Dubs, I personally think that it would be easier to sleeve a modular PSU that it would a non modular one, at least you can take the cables away from the PSU altogether with modular cables.

Once you've got the hang of it I'd say PCI-E power cable should take 15 mins or so.

What, 15 minutes to do the entire cable?!?!

It was taking me close to 15 minutes to do a single wire!!!

Or, just buy cable exteneders, that way you are keeping you PSU warrenty, and won't need and system downtime.

Just plug the nicely braided cable in once its finished and sort out the cable management

It was extensions that I used for my 8-pin and 24-pin cables, but for the PCIe cables I couldn't find anywhere that sold 8 pin extensions, so I just sleeved the PSU cables instead.

I only sleeved half of the cable and left the original sleeving on the other half.

Some companies don't mind if you resleeve the cables.

Funny we should bump in to each other again, reiyushin :p

As you probably know(or I'd like to think so anyways) I'm doing my build ATM, this was one of the last things I was looking in to, and funnily enough getting it all from MDPC.

Did you end up buying one of the kits? or just bits and bobs, also what did you end up spending over there - the only thing that put me off the first few times browsing was knowing it would turn up at my doorstep ok :p :p

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll invest in a few extension cables :)

@samurl

I just got a few bits and bobs to try it out.

Not sure how long it takes to get here but I ordered today and it's shipped today so that's a nice start :D

A word of warning,

Once you get into sleeving cables you'll find yourself totally hooked

Or is that just me???

Definately not cheap :) but I ran through every upgrade/mod I could think of and this one made the most sense :)

- I was gonna get an 800D but my parents got me my 902 for Christmas and I've not got the budget for decent watercooling yet :)
- I was gonna get the H50 but I saw a few reviews which put the Fenrir above it on the AM3 platform. My temps max out at 49 anyway :)
- I was gonna get a second 4890 but this first one eats through everything I play with ease.

Sleeving will hopefully keep me busy ;) and in the end it looks awesome :)

The 24pin Extension arrived from OcUK :) the first piece of the puzzle.
Total time investment so far: ~30 seconds :)

Question:
I've got 2 4pin molex to 6pin PCI-E adaptors, I assume there's no difference running my GFX off these instead of the 6pins? It'd let me sleeve these instead of the pins from the PSU.

Or better yet, anyone know where to get a 6+2 PCI-E extender? I need the +2 bit because I don't know what my next GFX update will be :) email in trust :)

I've also got some sleeving and heat-shrink on it's way....it's either going to be addictive or extreeml stressfull ! 0_o . you will have to post when you get started so we can see if you get hooked!

Also be prepared for ur fingers to really hurt after, if u have a large case that is. Took me a weekend but i also replaced all the cables with black wire and black housing also (most of the cables were over 90cm long). Lets put it this way one thing i will say it's a lot less painful the bigger the radius, however sometimes to get the really sweet looks u have to put some sheer hardcore effort in :P (managed to fit 3 fan cables into 3mm braid let's put it this way it was very slow progress.) Yea i would also say to have all the parts ready and cut for u to do braiding theres nothing more annoying then having to release ur fingers and lose the end of the cable :P just so u can cut a new piece of heatshink.

My first lot arrived, Aquamarine blue :)

Don't have my pin remover yet (please please come tomorrow :) ) so I've just sleeved a sata cable. I'll post up a pic tomorrow when there's better light :)
