i feel terrible for not mentioning wu tang in my first post. i pretty much idolise the lot of them. can do no wrong

yeah, I love Wu Tang clan, from Gravediggaz, 36 Chambers, Wu Tang forever and all the solo albums. Liquid Swords, Cuban Linx, Supreme clientèle and digi digi Bobby digital ofcourse :D

And not forgetting their affiliates like Sunz of Man, Black Knights, KillaArmy, Dreddy Kruger etc.

And they are still making some great stuff today, "Wu Tang meets indie Culture" is damn epic as is RZA's stuff for Afro Samurai game and anime.

Rip Ol' Dirt Dog.

I love the RAWKUS INC stuff too, like the early Mos Def and Kweli. Rugged Man, Common, Shabam Shadeeq, Pharaoh Monch, even KRS one and Eminem feature on some tracks, check out Soundbombing2 and Lyricist Lounge.

Gald we still got some real Hiphop heads out there. I try and spread the word wherever possible.

I agree totally, weird how you always forget to mention them when someone asks your taste though!

They were pretty much the first hip-hop albums I bought back in the 90's, the solo stuff especially just kills it. Supreme Clientele and Meth's Ticals are incredible albums, although they've all taken a dive in recent years sadly.

The first Capadonna album was a banger too, his flow's almost Nas good in this track (feat. Ghostface):

Top marks to NullVoid for posting some Mobb Deep too, The Infamous is one of my favourite albums.

36 chambers is a seminal album for me and was the album that fully ignited my interest in Hip-Hop. I had it on tape and I remember playing it so much in my first car that it pretty much wore out. Good job CDs came along so I could get a good quality replacement. :D

I find it interesting how some of you define hip-hop. What is (to use your words), 'real hip hop' ? I see that term being banded about this thread a lot. So what constitues real hip hop?

Are the Beasties real hip hop? Is DJ Format real hip hop? What about Eminem and De La Soul. Is this real hip hop -

And if they aren't real hip hop, why?

I really hate to quote wikipedia, however in this case, to me the definition pretty much fits. I think the general consensus is the same.

Hip hop is a musical genre which developed alongside hip hop culture, defined by key stylistic elements such as rapping, DJing, sampling, scratching and beat boxing.

Of course there are many sub genres, however over time these evolve and peoples interpretation of what fits into which category changes too.

Take for example the roots Manuva track listed above. - They won a Best Hip Hop Act 1998, They dont exactly match well with the rest of the hip hop music here. But still are classed as hiphop or often dub.

Even tracks such as this from dj shadow, is often categorised as hip hop, due to its style, record label & being entirely sampled music. - Great album too :)
