A half-smoked cigar abandoned by former British prime minister Winston Churchill has sold for more than $7,000.

The cigar was tossed aside by Mr Churchill as he headed to an urgent meeting of his cabinet in 1941 and was kept as a souvenir by a member of his domestic staff.

Mr Churchill smoked thousands of cigars during his time as prime minister and 69 years later this particular one still carries a personalised label bearing his name.

The cigar only survived because instead of discarding it the member of his staff sent it to a friend.

She wrote on Downing Street paper that it was a souvenir of one of the greatest men who ever lived in England.

Rather odd, but I suppose everyone has their hobbies.

True, it would be a bit like charlie chaplins stick or lorel and hardys bowler hats, iconic objects you think of when you think of them.

Ah but if it was Fighting Jack Churchill then maybe you could have bought his sword, I just love the detail that he was the only person to fell an enemy with a longbow in WWII.

Wow.

Thank you very much for the link semi :)

I like the fact the man went in with bow as well.

"any officer who goes into action without his sword is improperly dressed." :D

The more I read the more that guys a machine!!! "A mortar shell killed or wounded everyone but Churchill, who was playing "Will Ye No Come Back Again?" on his pipes as the Germans advanced. " LOL

As the ramps fell on the first landing craft, Churchill leapt forward from his position playing The March of the Cameron Men on bagpipes, threw a grenade, and began running towards the bay.

The man was an absolute legend, I know the phrase is overused but he's unquestionably earned the description and that choice of tune is genius.
