Played the BF:BC2 beta and yes its not optimized just yet but i cant see much changing as on high at 1680x1050 im getting 25-35fps.
Turn gfx settings on low and i get a smooth 60+ fps.
So is it worth upgrading to 5870 or even 5850?
Will my q6600 at 3.4ghz be the bottleneck for this game?

So either
a) stick and make do on mediumish settings.
b) upgrade to 5870 in March when game comes out.
c) upgrade to 5870 and upgrade to i5/7 as GPU upgrade wont be enough.

Any help appreiciated.

5870 definitely wins... (scroll down to the graphs!) Test was done with a Q9650 @ 4GHz though. I can't see you being limited by your stated CPU however.

edit: decided to upload the image because people will inevitably whine

I have a 5850 with a q6600 and haven't seen the frames dip below 40fps on the high settings (1680x1050).
BFBC2 looks great on high, especially the smoke and damage effects. Very happy with the card, I really don't think you would be disappointed with one.

Suprised how well the 260 is doing... still hanging in there... with overclocking should be able to tuck in right behind the stock 5850 then.

260 has got no chance of catching the 5850 even when clocked, think of BFBC2 as crysis in performance terms, it takes raw power to get decent FPS, OC wont help much.

I'd be wary about making any decisions on which card to choose for this game based on the beta.

We already know that performance is all over the place and theres some headroom for improvement.

Plus I very much doubt either nvida or ati have optimised their drivers for the game.

Yer, with my 4870 1gb, its kinda sluggish at 1920x1080, but like titanium said gonna wait for the game to be properly released/end of beta when we'll get driver and game improvements....

According to that graph it would almost catch a stock 5850 in that specific benchmark - almost all GTX260 will hit 20-25% shader overclocks over stock and 25-30% core overclocks not to mention a good boost on the memory - which should all translate to atleast fps in the upper 30s on that graph.

Hmmm...I really am torn now. Was going to go lay down £230 on a 5850 but might now consider the Gigabyte GTX260 Super Over Clock for £158 which basically hits GTX275 speeds and is not that far behind the 5850, for £70 less. Not bothered about DX11 at the moment.

I game at 1920x1200 and the benchmarks for that res show 22/32 for a GTX275 (which is equiv to a Gigabyte GTX260 SOC) and 26/36 for the 5850...I'd say thats pretty close.

Yeah 5850 can easily clock to 900+ on the core and blow that 275 in to the water..it's like at 750 core in them benchmarks.

£160 for EOL old tech or 50+ extra for future proof DX11 high performance card...mm...decisions...

Ahhh glad I found this thread... on my system with a 4870 1GB 1920x1200 @ high it's like 25 - 40 fps on fraps... it's unplayable at that so I turned it back to medium... that's okish except for close up firefights and explosions so really want to upgrade now... but I'm wondering if there is much difference between my cpu and a quad core in this game because my friend has a i7 920 with a 4890 and says he can play nicely at high, I doubt it but hey... :P I know you can do +Fullproc to support all the cores or does that work on a dual core too?

Have you tried forcing the game to run in DX9 mode? I gained an extra 50 FPS and in all honesty I couldn't tell the difference graphically, heavy explosive moments never go below 50 FPS. If you want smother gameplay in most recent games then a quad is the way to go.

The question is not whether the 260 can play the game (because it can quite well), but whether you really need to play on highest settings with AA. I certainly found the game very playable at 1680x1050 without AA on my GTX260. Is NxAA worth ~£200 to you, because at the end of the day a GTX260 is only one third slower than a 5870?
