The upcoming 6 core Thuban processors will make it’s first appearance in the market somewhere in May 2010 according to OCQ. If the predictions are right, we would see lots of them at the Computex Taipei 2010 show to be held in June 2010.
The codenamed Thuban series of processors are hexa core (six) processors based on a 45nm process. We heard that they will have a 95W TDP. Some information we gathered showed that some models can be up to 125W which we can’t confirm.
The accompanying chipsets would be available as early as Apr 2010. We expect it to be the AMD 890FX discrete chipset (with SB850). From what we understand, it is said that the AM3 socket processor should also work with older 790FX or 790GX boards with a BIOS update (some models).
We look forward to see the first Hexcore processor from AMD. Here are some 'rumored' yet incomplete specs.

I thought the AMD's 6 core Thuban was to be out before Intel releases their six-core Gulftown, because as far as i've read, Intel's is supposed to be released around march, april time???

I thought so too but must have changed it. Might be timing it with the new chipset coming out?. I'm going to wait and get the new chipset and one of those chip's for my new case when it's finished.

I wonder if Intel's six-core Gulftown will be delayed as well because according to some websites on the internet Intel's meant to be bringing out a new S1366 chipset X68 (codename Tylersburg-Refresh) with SATA 6Gb and USB 3.0 sometime early this year too.

Not to sound too dumb, so these new amd cpu's wont need a new socket that aint out. It just uses the AM3 the one my motherboard supports the asus crosshair III?

They said maybe with a bios update, or maybe just on the new chipset like Crosshair 4?.

I would like a new one but I'm cheap when it comes to motherboards so when wakayoda says it's down scalable to AM3 boards does he mean they'll not be able to run it as well as any newer boards with full support? Or would I need the new board to run it best?

Shame as I just got a new PC, but never really been an AMD fan here.
I'd say about £400+ maybe, as AMD always seem much cheaper than Intel, even though I ain't seen the price for the i7-980X(i think thats the name of their 6 core:)).

If the 6 core will do 4ghz, I'll think about one. Otherwise the 965 does me fine. :P

I might be wrong but it's very unlikely AMD's 6 core Thuban will overclock any where near 4ghz on just air cooling because of it being a 45nm die chip and with two more cores means a lot more heat.

Intel's six-core Gulftown on the other hand should manage 4ghz+ with good air cooling.

[edit]

I`m sure i've seen posts here on the forum already of Intel's six-core Gulftown 4ghz+ overclock examples.

Not getting one now even if it does make 4ghz, I got my 965BE to hold 4.020ghz long enough to run SuperPi 1M with an HT link of 2400mhz in 17.3secs. Slow compared to an i7, but I haven't seen an AMD based system do it that quickly on air cooling before. (It's bound to have been done faster though). :P

I did try for 4.040ghz, but it crashed. :(

Might try it again with on overclocked NB, when I work out where in the BIOS it is....

If I could get below 17secs I'd be very happy.
