Hey there,

Got my 5870's set up in crossfire and after a clean install of windows noticed a big improvement. However i'm not sure it's running as well as it should be. I appreciate it won't be like double but wondered what other people were getting ?

I'm running Crysis ( 1 ) with everything maxxed out + CCC + 8xAA on extream and getting around 35 - 40 fps in big open areas but in some places it can go down more and stutter if only for a second or two.

I'm running a Q6600 @ 3Ghz and 8 gig DDR2 @ 1000Mhz, Not the best as getting old now but i've never really had anything that it couldn't run as such however i'm thinking this maybe bottlenecking the system. I'm not upgrading until 6 / 8 core CPU's come out ( hopefully this year )

So i'd like to know if anyone can tell me there experience of crossfire with there 5870's and maybe some benchmark test I can compare so I know i'm getting all I can from it.

Thanks,

Kev

Your cpu is bottlenecking the cards mate. A minimum quad core cpu to run new 58** series in crossfire is 3.4ghz. Try and oc the q6600 some more. If you can't, take 4gb memory out, as 4gb is more than enough for the gaming needs, this will allow you to overclock more, as there is less stress involved.

If you can't oc any more, I would be looking for a core i5/i7 system mate.

Ok well i've taken the cpu down to 3.0 as normally run at 3.3 but cpu fan a bit screwed so lowered it. Still i'll go give it a go at 3.3 and see what happens.

Don't take out 4GB of RAM, 4 GB isn't "more than enough" at all. You can never have too much RAM.

You should try and overclock your CPU a little more though.

At 3.3Ghz it won't be bottlenecking your cards THAT much to be honest.

1st: 4gb is more than enough for the gaming needs. Ask anyone.
2nd: More memory = more programs can be ran at once. E.g; 1 game, msn, music etc...
3rd: Taking the memory out will allow him to overclock more, as it takes less stress of the memory controller.

Ask me? 4GB isn't enough for me.

2: You're giving me a lesson on RAM?

3: Not necessarily, my PC overlocks to the same speeds with 4GBs and 8GBs.

It's not RAM amount, it's how many DIMMs are full, my Q6600 overclocks to over 4Ghz with all DIMM slots full.

OK guys don't start getting ****y with each other, I appreciate help from you both. I went back to my old overclock ( which has ran for 1 year fine until now ) with is 3.3 and 1100 ram, Loaded up crysis and got about 10 - 15 fps more, then my pc decided to crash because of the heat. I have been aware of this as I downclocked it due to this. So it does seem a more stable overclock and will actully get the benefit of the 2 cards. I'm going to get a shot of a heatsink from a friend next week and will take it from there. At least now I know it's not running at full potential and I think I should be able to get more out of it :)

I'd love to get 50fps on crysis, i've taken out heatsink, re-applied artic paste, pointed cpu fan to top or case ( 902 ) and the temps have dropped about 10 degrees, the heatsink wasn't level when I open the case, so i'll hopefully get a decent clock out of it again. At 2.88 Ghz on stock VID ( 1.3250, :( ) so farr, will keep pushing it but think i'm gonna need a Voltage bump soon.
