yea we'v got keysurf or whatever theyr called just installed at our base, 10mb up/down, connects at 9.5 so im happy with that. Although theres no control panel into your account which I dont think is right, norr is there any freeview IPTV serviced as was advertised, Iv complained about that already as I dont think i should be paying the full £25 when I see the IPTV as a massive part of the service.

Talk to admins, its the only way to do it. One of my firends at uni tried bypassing stuff and just ended up getting disconnected from the DNS. He then had to go to the admins and explain exactly what he had done.

You're comparing rape and theft to online gaming?
No, I'm discussing the fact the breaking rules is breaking rules. You can't pick and chose.

And I'm not trolling. People like this make sys admin's jobs nightmares. Snotty nosed undergrads thinking they're better than everyone else and the rules don't apply.

How is it making the admins job a nightmare by playing games? If he was connecting something like a torrent/newsgroups client I'd agree but gaming...I don't even see why it should be blocked in the first place.

Maybe I'm missing some tech knowledge on a side-effect it has but I can't see the big deal.

its not a big deal at all, and if you're paying for a connection in residential halls then you should be free to use that connection for things like online gaming.

"breaking rules is breaking rules" - why dont pickpockets and fare dodgers get life sentances, after all they break rules, just like murderers do.

the admins should do their job and look into securing their network better then.

Because it's a lesser crime? He wasn't suggesting tunneling through the network should get him a life sentence either.

Anyone care to explain why you would want to ssh tunnel or whatever?

I had no problem gaming at Southampton. I had internet and used it. Never saw anything that restricted what I could use it for.

I actually saw a reference to uni Unreal Tournament servers on the IT pages one day though - not sure what that was all about.

There are worse things you could do to abuse your uni internet connection than play an online game for a few hours a day. Unless you are wanting to host games the amount of upload bandwidth needed is small fry in the scheme of the uni's pipe, and how about all that http down traffic from the likes of iplayer and youtube?

Strange approach these uni's take if they think that playing an online game is an abuse of connection.

How about setup an FTP server or have a torrent app running 24/7, now that is abuse.

We had Keycom/Keysurf in our halls, biggest piece of rubbish ever. £10 a month for the service and there was a single 802.11b access point per flat of 9 people, no wired option at all. The service was down about 50% of the time and that was even if you could connect to the access point.
