Nokia N900

thanks i'll try this tonight :) root access how do i get that?

Make sure you have the Extras-Testing repository, search for and download the app "rootsh".

Before the steps in my previous post, in terminal type "sudo gainroot" or "rootsh". the first time you do this I'm pretty sure it'll ask you to enter a new root password, do so, and don't forget it. :p

Obviously usual warnings about playing about with your phone in root, may brick your device, etc, etc.

Can't see much difference quality wise between the camera and the one on my N95 8gig, but always thought that was superb anyways!

After this weekend i really am in awe at the camera! Considering its not labeled much differently (N900: Carl Zeiss, Tessar 2.8/5.2 AF 5MP) to the N95's (N95: Carl Zeiss Optics Tessar 2.3/5.6 Autofocus 5 Megapixel) it really is a different beast! Taking photos and videos in low light (ie clubs) the N900 is head and shoulders above the N95 in quality and clarity, videos of club lasers are a sight to behold! Normal daylight shots are pretty much the same as the N95 (excellent) :D

Real test will be this weekend as i'm doing a ton of miles so will be thrashing it!

Sure hope the charger 'adaptor' will allow me to charge it in my car using my N95 car charger! :D

One slight complaint about the N900... I thought the N95 was poor on battery, a day of hard useage, or 2 days moderate and its running low... The N900 of very light useage for 1 day is almost flat! I used it so much yesterday i had to charge it (from warning to full) 3 times!

N95 car chargers (nokia & unbranded) both worked with the bundled N900 'power adaptor'

All in all i'm very impressed with it, but there are certain features on the N95 that really set it apart as they are shamefully lacking on the N900...

Yeah, its not a "bad" camera considering its a very small thing built into a phone. I think the people that are calling it poor quality are comparing it to a full DLSR, which clearly it isn't going to be able to compete with. Its perfectly adequate for taking snapshots with in my opinion, just don't expect it to be completely noise free especially with the size of the sensor compared to what size it outputs the images at. Stick them on a 6x4 and you wont notice the noise.

I'm the same, came from an N95 8GB (a very battered, scratched and much loved thing) and when I first got the N900 I though the battery life was terrible. However after a week or so of use, it seemed to me that the battery life was a fair bit better, it wasn't bouncing off empty by the end of the day but instead is about 1/2 full. I know the batterys' in this aren't supposed to have a bedding in time, but that's the impression I got from it.

Give it a week or so of charge/discharge cycles and I reckon you'll find it to be better. Also, if you haven't done so already, apply the latest firmware update (just goto apps and select update, its the Maemo one) as this included a few wee bug fixes that were battery draining. Also make sure you disconnect from wifi/3G when you're not using the internet as its a tenfold difference in battery consumption with it on.

If you are particularly bored you can open up terminal and type "lshal | grep battery" (no quotes) for battery charges levels and other information. Also typing "top" will run something a bit like task manager, you can see what's munching your CPU power, I noticed my cpu consumption went down drastically by removing a few widgets from the desktop (hildon-desk is the desktop manager process), I guess they were buggy.

Great advice thanks!

A quick question (hopefully) what is the default 'paste' command? Or keystroke?

What i've had a couple of times now (and its bugging me) is a txt from someone saying 'this is my new number', i can quite easily copy the number - but when going into contacts, removing their old... i now can't find a paste option anywhere to put the new number in the mobile field?!

You shouldnt need to copy and paste it, just click on the number (which should be underlined) then, 'merge with contact' when on the phone page.

However if you need it.. copy is ctrl+c and paste is ctrl+v.:)

I've done it, but it wasn't easy to find out!

Within the conversation you don't get a 'merge contact' option - only seem to have that on an already existing contact. The txt (from an unknown number) only gives you the options of 'Forward, delete, copy' when you click+hold over it, clicking on the number listed at the top of the message gives you 'clear conversation'. You have to click+hold over the conversation on the main conversations screen, then 'open contact card', then you have a merge option! :)

Oh and i couldn't seem to get ctrl+v to work either! lol

any way to stop "vodafone live" mobie site?

cheers

is there any way to view pdf files in portrait on pdf reader? reading portait pages of text in landscape mode is a tad annoying -.-

Just a quick one for all the N900 users in here - is there a way to use the word completion function when using the onscreen keyboard?

At the minute it shows the completed word but theres no way to accept it!

This annoyed me to, I stopped using the on-screen one.

That's odd, it goes to the full fat version on my phone by default, both via typing in the exact address, and also by searcking "ebay uk" and selecting to site at the top of the list. On vodafone also. What happens if you make a bookmark to the full fat version, and then go to that bookmark?

I sorted it, vodafone has 2 packet data connect settings. i changed to internet instead of wap (for live service)

Tap on the completed bit of the word :)

Hmm, is there any way to select from a list of auto-complete words? Say for example I'm typing "identify", the auto-complete will show "identification" after the first couple of letters, how do I get it to show "identify"?

For those interested, Carphone Warehouse have added O2 to their list of networks.

I am so turned on right now :)

Placed order and will get the phone Monday. 600mins, unlimited texts for £30 p/m with £7.50 bolt on for unlimited internet. Only downside is the monthly insurance which is £13.99, but I have to have that.

Also remeber that if you are upgrading they can take off the unlimited text bolt on, so it comes down to 500 txts, and put the unlimited internet one on for free. This is what I have done so have 600mins, 500txts and unlimited internet for £30 pm. Its a 24 mnth contract though...
