Update: NVIDIA has confirmed that the Twitter account is indeed theirs, so this information is official.

With a skeptical eye towards Twitter, a post was made on the NVIDIAGeForce account 4 hours ago announcing the names of the first two GF100 cards. As we’re largely sure this is a legitimate NVIDIA account we’re going to go ahead and post this information, but please keep in mind that we have not yet been able to confirm that this is indeed an official NVIDIA posting (it’s 10PM on the West Coast).

With that out of the way, the post reads as follows:

Fun Fact of the Week: GeForce GTX 480 and GeForce GTX 470 will be the names of the first two GPUs shipped based on our new GF100 chip!
It’s a very small piece of information so we don’t have a lot of commentary here, but the names are a little bit surprising. The names are consistent with NVIDIA’s G/GT/GTX naming scheme, but we’re not quite sure what happened with the numbers. Technically speaking NVIDIA launched their 300 series late last year with the GeForce 310, an OEM-only rebadge of the GeForce 210. But we had expected that NVIDIA would fill the rest of the 300 series with GF100 and GF100-derrived parts, similar to how the 200 series is organized with a mix of DX10 and DX10.1 capable parts. Such an expectation is also consistent with the earlier rumors on the GTX 380 and GTX 360.

Instead they've gone ahead and started the 400 series of cards with GF100, not that we’re complaining. This is great news for developers and buyers since it prevents a repeat of the GeForce 4 Ti/MX situation, but it does make us wonder what the point was in burning off a whole series number with a single bottom-tier card. And although this is an article about the 400 series, we're left wondering what the purpose is of a rebadged 300 series is since that clearly has an impact on the naming of the 400 series.
At any rate, no further information was announced. We still don't know what the performance will be like or the clock speeds. It's a good bet however that the GTX 470 will have some CUDA Cores disabled, if NVIDIA's GTX 280/270/260 naming scheme is anything to go by.

I'm hoping we see some more details on the cards in the form of independent tests and benchmarks in the coming weeks. Nvidia isn't impressing anybody with their twitter posts and rigged benchmarks thus far.

I agree - some independant opinions would be nice.

Don't get me wrong, i'm looking forward to these and hoping they're decent cards but in all honesty Nvidia have handled this whole GF100 situation poorly.

haha, so its so late there skipping a generation and leaving the GTX300 series open for a good set of DX10.1 rebrands? lmao. thats what im betting on anyways!! talk about spin...letting out a small bit of information every so often. its funny on facebook because all the nvidea fanboys are goin mad and jizzing all over the fact that the name has finally been released! head over there for a good laugh at some of the comments xD

Oh my, it's a bigger than the last number! When are NVIDIA going to realise we don't give a **** what name they give it. For all I care they could call it the 24000GTXXTXABC, I just want a card that plays the games I have flat out, with good IQ and excellent frame rates. Is it so much to ask? It's what their business is structed around anyway - graphics! Not naming schemes! ;)

Makes me laugh to this day, when the showed Crysis running on a 8800GTX on a cinema screen with everything turned up, and it looked beautiful. Why is it that they are now 2 series on, and their cards STILL can't do that? They didn't even have a '200' series card, all they had was an 8800GTX, so why is it when consumers get their hands on it, it does nothing that they showed it to do? :o

You laugh about it, but honestly, that is what NVIDIA will do. Either, the 400 series will be high end, the 300 series will be mid-low end. OR, the 400 series will be high end, and the 300 series will be a 200 series rebrand.

I think they'll probably do the same with the 300 series as they did with the 100 series, i.e. release rebranded OEM-only cards. At least they're trying to separate them I guess. :p

This is going to be such an amazing card, its performance will be unrivalled, nvidia have always delivered the fastest and latest technology first.
I truly hope it comes in at a price that's accessible to all people, and I hope nvidia continue to take market share from ati, they truly deserve to be in the market leading position that they currently occupy.

Heinz are bringing out a new baked bean. This is going to be such an amazing bean, its taste will be unrivalled, Heinz have always delivered the best quality and tastiest baked bean first. I truly hope it comes in at a price that's accessible to all people, and I hope Heinz continue to take market share from other baked beans manufacturers, they truly deserve to be in the market leading position that they currently occupy.

lol.

At least Heinz haven't tried to rebrand their beans.

They may well be up to their old tricks again. GTX360/380 could well be rebrands of the GTX2x0 series. The new chip is probably going to be expensive to make, and the older cards should be a bit cheaper now, and may make up the bulk of sales in the OEM market. The GTX4xx, if true, will most likely be strictly enthusiasts and rich people only.

Are you quoting something? It almost sounds like marketing speal. - Or am I missing the sarcasm? :p

Competition is good though and Nvidia have been out of the game since ATI's 5xxx's.

I can not wait for the all-new Heinz Geforce GTX380 with new DX10.1 G92 core! It will be the tastiest of all the video cards! Mmmm!

... What a dumb statement? lol
The fastest and latest technology FIRST? Is that why they are a generation behind?

A price that is accessible to ALL people? When has that EVER happened, particularly from NVIDIA.

As for Market share, AMD are actually making a huge come back and NVIDIA are falling.

Market leading position...? They are behind...

I sure hope that was a sarcastic statement otherwise you deserve an anti fan boy slap lol. Don't get me wrong I am being optimistic with NVIDIA’s new card, and I too hope it delivers excellent performance for a decent price, however cautiously optimistic that is. But you my friend, are being WAY too optimistic!

Nvidia's continuation of its market leading position will be further cemented by the release of fermi.
Under the expert leadership of the company CEO Jen-hsun the stock price per nvidia share will continue its relentless climb through the black.
Nvidia shares have always been an exceptional investment for share holders since the release of geforce(nv1) onwards and upwards, including remarkable products such as geforce2, geforce3, 5800ultra and the dominance displayed by the release of 200series 3D graphics solutions.
