Firstly, Hi Overlclockers forums! I've come to this place for tech advice before any purchase for a while now. Never made a post before though.

I've had my Current Desktop for a while now, I think I got it when the 8800GTX came out, as I was one of the first people to get it. Recently the 8800's GPU has been overheating (137 degrees) to the point that it will close down the game I’m playing. I’m currently in the process of cleaning it (waiting on thermal pad delivery) I've never been that impressed with the PC I’ve had. I've got friends who have inferior cards and can get better performances.

Anyway, what I'm after is a PC capable of playing World of Warcraft/CoD: MW2 at 1920x1080 with a good FPS. I'm not fussed about having to turn gfx down if need be as long as I can play at max res with good FPS. I'd also like to record in game footage and that can reduce FPS.

I bought Corsair XMS2 1GBx4 DDR2 6400C4 x not too long ago, I know its DDR2 but I was hoping to use these if possible to save some money.

Also it would make it a lot easier for me to fit the PC into my current desk if the case was 45cm or less in height.

Edit *I think I could stretch the gap to 47cm which would allow me to get the Antec 300, a case that seems well recommended*

ok edited to include hard drive. reluctant to skimp on other components wise it wouldnt be much of an upgrade from what you allready have . if you need an os you may need to downgrade the gfx card to a 5770 but again i don't think thats much of an upgrade from an 8800 gtx. you can maybe keep your existing hard drive to keep nearer the £500 mark, i dont think the one you've got is too bad?

The 5850 is an awesome gfx card as thats where you need to splurge. an extra core for more multi threaded games ars they are released, and you can keep your existing ram.

psu is overkill but will allow you to upgrade in the future :)

I have a feeling I'm about to ask a stupid question. The motherboards are saying DDR2 does this mean they wont take DDR3 if i wanted to upgrade in the future and if so would that be a that much of a bad thing?

they will only take ddr2, it would cost you another £90 at the least to upgrade to a ddr3 motherboard with 4gb of pc3-12800 ram

so yeah it's up to you £500 or £600 now?

Ok looking at what was recommended i went with the higher performance options(also more expensive ><) i could use my old DVD drive and HD to save some money, which means all i will need is the PSU. Jamie you went for 550w and monkeyking 700W. Not sure which one to go for. Will i notice much of a difference in terms of performance/heat/noise?

well with that quad and that gpu i'd go for 700w as that'll give you plenty of headroom :)

Plenty of headroom for what, running the system twice?

I have the machine in my sig running off an Antec 550W. (Q6600 @ 3.7GHz, Intel DX38BT, 8GB Corsair XMS3 PC3-10666, 2x Radeon 5770's, GeForce 9800GT, 6x HDD's 2x DVD-RW's, and a bucket of fans).

With the Gigabyte motherboard there are two versions - one has the SB700 southbridge and the other the SB710 southbridge and an improved layout.

This motherboard definitely has the SB710 southbridge:

If you intend to overclock the Phenom II X4 get the following motherboard instead:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-376-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1482

It has an 8+2 phase VRM and VRM cooling which are essential if you are overclocking a 125W quad core.

This PSU should be more than enough for a single HD5850 1GB:

It has excellent reviews:

Ok i'll go for the 600W OCZ PSU. The Reviews say it runs quiet too which is important to me. CAT did you mean to link the same motherboard twice? Having the option to overclock would be good, I've never overclocked anything before though. Also from what i understand the Corsair Ram i have is great for being overclocked.

Price has gone down from earlier :D

Might even think about chucking in a Hard Drive

I was talking about this motherboard:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-199-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1482

It can do symmetrical Crossfire at PCI-E 2.0 8X and has an 8+2 phase VRM and very good VRM cooling too! The latter two points are important for overclocking as it means the processor will get enough power and at the same time the critical power regulation bits will not overheat once you crank up the voltage.

This is a good article to read:

http://techreport.com/articles.x/16744

The important thing is to make sure that a Phenom II X4 955BE does not pass 62C when overclocked.
