350Z Good Idea?

Thanks :)

That's the thing, I don't know enough about this type of car to judge whether or not I can afford one. I'm hoping people can kind of summarise a typical monthly cost.

During my ownership, this is roughly what I have spent over the year on my 350z:
Insurance for a year £1500 ish at 21 (now down to £950 with 3years ncb)
Big service £320
Uprated discs and pads all round £600ish fitted
Small service £180 (should last it for another 9months)
About £250 a month in fuel (200 miles a week at a low 20mpg figure)
Tax £220 ish
MOT £50

So about £5870 over the year.

So I guess you need to budget £500ish per month to run the thing and that's only if it's been paid out right (no money owed). This excludes any modifications/extras/misc costs and the fact that the car will need £300 worth of tyres in the next few months. However the brakes might not need doing for any other zed, mine were just due when I bought it.

£100 each for tyres for a 350Z? Were they Linglongs?

You'd be suprised, mine are 19/35/285's iirc (larger than stardard 18's) and could get Falken 452's for £116 each a few weeks back, think they are about £130 now.

Wow that is a lot, that would be nearly half of my monthly salary gone on the car alone...

Don't forget, it's a 300bhp coupe with a 3.5l V6 engine. It's not going to be very economical to run as your daily, but it's worth every penny imo....and isn't that bad to run in comparison to cars the next step up (Z4M, 'vette, CSL, M3 etc) and not huge amounts more than running other equivilants such as S2000 (higher insurance than a 350z), anything turbo hatchback...is still just a hatchback with turbo running costs and pretty common/stigma attached (Astra VXR for example) :)

Yeah I had my heart set on a VXR for ages too, but so many people don't like them for handling reasons, and ironically, they're getting very common.

They're more expensive to buy used than 350Zs too from what I've seen.

Still only has 2 seats mind. If you are opening the door to a 2 seater then you would have to check out the s2000 and Z4 as well.

Have you driven one? ;)

I've not test driven anything yet, will start properly looking around in March.

BTW, say I decide to keep my Astra as a normal car, but get something else for fun, what would insurance be like? My understanding is that I only keep NCB on the current car, and would have 0 on the new one, correct?

Also, say it's £400 in insure the Astra, £1100 to insure the 350Z. If they're on the policy would it be as simple as adding them together or would there be a discount for insuring two cars?

Some places do multi-car policies (2+ cars on one polict) Admiral offers it, not sure who else does.

Be sure to test drive a 'Teg at least. :)

If you are put off with the running costs of a single 350z, I wouldn't advise running two cars.

Twice the tax, maintenance, more on insurance (it's still 2 cars ...even with discount). I would pool your resources buddy. I hate to use the line, "until you can afford to run two cars", because in some circumstances it can work out...but based on your info in this thread, I would just put the money towards a single tidy car. :)

Very wise words mate, it was just something that came to mind, I never really considered it to be a viable option (unless I got some amazing deal lol).

I really like the 350Zs, I just honestly think 2 seats and no boot space would bug the hell out of me.

Any other Coupes we haven't covered? :D

There is boot space in the 350Z, it's just awkward space... and can be quite shallow.

Yeah, have you ruled out any of the BMW family yet?

Too Shallow for an RC plane about 1m wingspan? :D

LOL not a chance
