Hiya,

Has anyone tried sticking normal gps on their mopeds or bigger bikes?
I somehow find it hard to justify the 250-300quid cost for the tom tom rider or garmin zumi and I can't stand my Satio loosing internet signal (agps ftl) mid way and bringing me connection lost error in the middle of the road !

There are plenty of aftermarket mountings or I can always glue it somewhere I guess ?

Also if anyone used the rider or zumi any comments regarding their quality would be appreciated !

Thanks in advance,

Phoenix

Normal car GPS units are not waterproof not are they designed to take the vibrations from a bike.

I had a normal Garmin on my RSV, it was grand.

I made a bracket out of copper pipe hammered flat and painted with Hammerite, it sat under the windscreen so a light shower it would get away with. I also had a sandwich bag and a rubber band in my pocket :D

You can get RAM mounts for the Garmins, the tomtoms with the clippy docking base thing I would never trust on a bike but a normal clip-on tomtom or garmin or similar will be fine.

Don't listen to anyone about vibrations, they don't have any moving parts. It's the BRACKET that can't deal with the vibes, so make your own. Plus it's a moped, it's hardly going to be torn off by the horsepowers, mine was on a 128 brake V-twin and it was absolutely fine.

I had the normal clip on the back of it with a hole drilled through it, and a bolt and a wingnut to attach it to my ghetto bracket.

Best thing about the copper pipe bracket was bending it to a different shape and fitting it to my dad's VFR in five minutes.

I've got a eTREX on my XTZ and that turns off at about 80ish due to vibration:( The old girl does buzz abit

I Bought a Garmin Oregon 200 which is a cheapish walker sat nav, it is waterproof, big screen, will route for road and also offroad (great for green laning). I also purchased a Ram bar mount for it. I've taken it offroading many many times aswell as doing a very long wet journey across ireland with no hiccups.

I know the TomTom is excellent as a friend who rides the bike has one - coupled with the bluetooth receiver he can also take calls on the move - though I wouldn't recommend that - he rides like a girl so I guess it's okay for him to do!

Not sure if they are worth the money though - but, out of the lot I've tested, the Tom Tom is certainly the best by a mile.

Hmm, I'm a bit dubious about these bodge-job gps ideas to be honest. Having said that I struggled to justify a TomTom Rider and just used a tank-bag with a map, so what do I know!

It is worth remembering that the TomTom can still be used in the car and comes with a charger for that and the bluetooth reciever will mean that you can have your phone on handsfree in the car too, so it's not a bike-only purchase.

So sounds like sticking just a normal one is completely doable ( considering I've been hanging my satio on a mirror bar it shouldn't be a prob ).

The oregon 200 doesn't look cheapish to me at all, cheapest I can find is around 200? That's just under the price of tom tom rider. I was looking more at purchasing something around 100-130 budget !

However the one I've got doesn't really have a proper bar like place so not sure how and where to mount it.

I'll post a pic or two tomorrow for a reference and maybe you folks could come up with some ideas as well.

Thanks for the input so far !

I managed to get the Oregon for £140 ish brand new from the auction place.

And monkey boy i just look at the screen most of the time, no need for voice commands, much easier than trying to read a map while riding!

I'm shocked you can actually travel far enough from home on a moped to actually get lost.

But yes a standard GPS will work, just stick it in a clear plastic bag and turn the voice instructions off.

Haha, well, it's just that my orientation on road is terrible and I just can't be arsed remembering maps and addresses of all the places...

A lot easier and stress-free for me if I just look at the screen and see where do I have to turn and can check where exactly I am as well.

What's the battery life like on a standard tomtom?

Should be around 2-3hrs I guess which is enough and I've got a charger socket under the seat so can always hook it up to charger.

Anyways, here are some picks and I've marked few places where I think it could be attached somehow. I've also found some kind of adhesive stick mounts on the net that i think could be a good idea as well.

I was thinking of some normal units like tom tom one etc.
