Has anybody uprated the cooling fans on their Xbox 360?

Hi all,

Since these consoles have so many issues relating to heat etc..

Just wondering if anyone's done a mod that helps keep it cooler?

Thanks

Not worth it, it's not the raw heat that causes issues. It's the torsion spring that attaches the heatsinks which warps the board during regular heat cycles.

Not true imho!
I have 2 release day 360's in this house and both are still going strong even though they have been proper ass raped and both needing new ROM's from extensive use.

Here's some pics:

My mate had this setup on his Xenon 12V mod on the internal fans and a Madcatz stand with upgraded fans on an external PSU to run after the console was off. Lasted 3 years it just delays the inevitable for early consoles imo.

Vesta Man

I like the mods

But the one with the clear casing - Surely with that big fan on top with no grill etc...

Are you not gonna end up blowing loads of dust into the console?

Thanks

Best solution if you're worried about heat is to trade your current console and get a jasper. The air which comes out the back of mine is barely lukewarm. Probably only cost you around 30-40£

I did last year on my 3 + years old 20GB Premium. Hacked the case apart & put in 2 x 80mm silent fans. When no central heating was on in the room or ambient room temps were not high it ran flawlessly. Soon as the summer came it could not handle the heat being produced & kept shutting down.

I attempted to reseat the HSF & apply AS5 but it then RROD so threw it away & bought a lovely quiet Jasper HDMI Arcade with 512MB Ram Flashram built-in.

IMO certainly not worth doing at all. I wasted £40 a year ago buying various 60/70/80 mm fans with & without builtin temp sensors & none can provide enough cooling for the 360 to not shutdown if ambient room temps rise a few degrees. The problem is the older 360's just have a poor thermal design & produce way too much heat for the case enclosure.

Either buy one of those XB01 case mods or a Jasper Arcade. I would always buy the Jasper Arcade as you get the 512MB flashram on newer models & its almost silent ;)

Below is the tutorial I created at the time & as you will see its a lot of work & a kick in the head when it does not work all the time (and trust me it cannot possibly work all year round in all temps)

How hot is your room! I have 2 launch day consoles still going strong, admittedly I have fixed one of them from RROD twice but other than that they're cushty! No need for uprated fans imo, but replacing the x-clamps and baking it for 4 minutes makes a huge difference. The air coming out the back is actually toasty now compared to luke warm before I reseated the heatsinks.

My launch day 360 is still going strong downstairs after it RROD'd on me a few years ago, but I fixed that sharpish by reflowing the solder at work. Then I replaced the fans with 2x Delta (don't ask!) 60 or 80mm fans, as I had them lying down from my old Coolermaster CM201 pc case.

Switched on the 360 and the fans sucked and blew out a large block of dust that must have been under the gpu heatsink! I thought the 360 had exploded for a second as I couldn't see :o This was done a year or two ago so I can't remember the precise details. I now use a jasper arcade 360 in my room that has been flawless.

Lol @ the external fans, I think i'd rather replace the whole xbox unit and go for one of those coolermaster cases or whatever they are.

@ Kainz: Christ! the 360 is loud enough without using Delta's

I was one of the lucky ones, as my launch day 360 was quite silent when playing games, apart from PGR3 which is the only game to make even my jasper noisy. The delta's are obviously noisy but in a large living room it'll be hard to hear anyway. The 360 would be a great machine to mod if it was bloomin easier to open!
