So my bro bough an iPhone off ebay, the guy looks genuine and said the iPhone is working fine and is on Orange. My bro gets it today and puts in his Orange pay monthly SIM and it just says Orange 3G, and there is no signal.

I checked the IMEI number and its fine (not locked).
Googled a lot, but not much info.

Any suggestions?

Cheers OCUK mobile gang!

P.S it's on latest update and is standard and not jailbroken.

Maybe its actually locked to o2 (or another network). Do you have an different sim cards to test out on it.

tried it in different areas ? if you get low orange signal in your house then you will have problems catching the signal on the iphone

The Orange SIM he is using now is a pay monthly one from his HTC Hero which he sold. He used to get reasonable signal :(

Ummm heres a thought...why not ring up Orange and see what they have to say:confused:...surely that would be the first thing you would do rather than come here and ask:confused:

Sounds like the sim card needs to be activated on the phone....orange now sell the iphone themselves so in theory should be able to help you.

So, to resolve these issues he went for an iPhone, where all of the above is true?

This isn't a dig at the iPhone by the way, I own one.

I hated the hero compared to the iPhone. I own both too and gave the hero to my partner.:o

if the iPhone you bought was on orange payg it might need the net settings changed for pay monthly.

It's probably a bad reception problem. In my experience, the iPhone's signal status icon is incredibly unreliable. Try moving the phone to a different location.

Hey guys. I tried my bro's SIM in my HTC tytn ii and it works fine, no his SIM is not locked in anyway.

As i said it says orange/orange 3g on the iPhone but can't make calls etc.
He can access the internet fine!

Can I change settings on the iPhone, GSM, GPRS etc?
Otherwise I think the iPhone must be locked to the previous owners SIM?

It says the SIM is a restricted network.
Cheers guys.

Check if it's still under warranty:
https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do

If it's a legit Orange one then it will be under warranty still and Apple will replace it free of charge within a couple of days for a new/refurb one (which will look like brand new). Either that or take it to an Apple shop and they will replace it there and then. Probably a lot easier than dealing with the ebayer.

Weird symptoms though, have you tried restoring it in iTunes?

also sounds like orange have barred the phone, this is done when people lose the phone and make insurance claim. Phone is then blocked from UK networks. I'd tell the seller that it does not work and explain how. Also contact orange and ask them has it been blacklisted if so tell them you got it off ebay and give the name of the seller as it could he/she could be doing insurance fraud :/
