just thinking out loud here, these seem amazingly cheap for what you get.

£3k gets you 50k, FSH, full leather heated seats, all the electrics you can think of, 150hp/130lb/ft twinspark, etc etc.

My mum owned one and had some minor issues but has said nothing (inc her TT) felt as great to drive.

Thoughts ?

Yeah, but the electrics won't ever work will they? :p
166s are even more bargainous, but i think they're even more unreliable..

147s seem a pretty good deal. I mean how unreliable can they really be?

A mate of mine just got one 2 weeks ago. He had it for 2 days before the power steering unit broke and it had to go back into the garage.

They really aren't as bad as the reputation.

My 146 has been perfectly reliable in terms of commuting. There have been problems, but they didn't stop me driving it.

...better yet, same engine in the Alfa GT ...I think really they are much the same thing, but the GT looks much better and has a nicer interior.

Different engine in the GT, out with twin spark, in with direct petrol injection.

The 147 is a 156 with a 2" shorter wheelbase, the GT is identical to a 156 underneath.

Please do. Even new they seem utter bargains compared to the competition.

I mean look at this :

http://pistonheads.com/sales/1179437.htm

Finished in Ghiaccio White with Black Roof and Black Leather Interior.

Specification includes Air Conditioning, 17'' Exclusive Design Alloy Wheels, Power Steering, Airbags, Stereo System with CD Player, Electric Windows, On Board Computer, ABS Braking, Steering Wheel Control, Lowered Sports Suspension, Chromed Exhaust Tail Pipes, Heated Electric Wing Mirrors, Leather Steering Wheel and Gear Knob, Remote Central Locking and Security System.

TEN miles on the clock. £13k new. 1.6 so not too powerfull, but its not THAT bad iirc. If you lived inner city, it would be perfectly acceptable.

What compares with that for £13k brand new ?

To be fair its a last generation car they've not had the money to replace. There are Y reg examples out there, which is why it cannot really fetch much money new..

let me know about these.

I LOVE alfas and had my eye on a 147 since i started to look at cars. Im just terrified about the bills.

guy at work has the 1.6 and hasnt had any problems though. Interior is realy top notch for that sort of money.

Id have to get a GTA though

A slightly less new Abarth 500, still with 25 months warranty.

And you can still fit the Esseesse kit before March..
They're fantastic little cars.

Mate had one of these, 2.0TS '53 Reg if I recall correctly. Had issues with the oil sump and a few electrical gremlins/problems.

Funny thing is, he used to say to you when you were in it with him "Yeah, you can really feel when the turbo kicks in, can you feel the kick?....".

Me : "This isn't turbocharged".

Him : "Aye it is, it's a TS, even has the badge on the back".

Me : "Nope, I can assure you this car doesn't have a turbo on it".

Him ( getting riled up ) "YES IT DOES!!!!".

Me : "Ok, when we stop, pop the bonnet and show me the turbo".

Him : "Ok, I will".

Car stops, we get out, he pops bonnet. Then he points at the rocker cover "Look, told you. Says Twin spark on there, that means a turbo you idiot".

Believe it or not, this was a guy who paid full dealer price brand new for a car that he thought was a 2.0 Turbo.

LOL, classic. He's feeling the kicks of the Variable Valve Timing and the Variable Length Intake Manifold coming in.

I really hate the GTA, it looks too agressive.

Pity a v6 conversion on any twinspark is so much pain however im informed a fiat turbo engine fits straight in.
Though if going to that bother might aswell just buy a vr6.

I will own one at some point but im hoping to choose wisely and sell 6 months down the line (unless I love it) for little to no cost.

Easier to fit standard bumpers to a GTA ands remove the cills. Then confuse the GTA fake spotters by actually having GTA headlights.

I think the GTA looks 1000 times better than the standard model though.

I have a 147, have had it nearly 2 years or so. Dare I say it, an extremely reliable car, fun and comfortable car.

Comfortable, happy to cruise on the motorway, all the mod cons, pretty, and goes pretty well, and sounds glorious (but maybe that is due to the autodelta pipe I have on :D). I've had the regulator on the driver side window fail, and a side light fail on me. That's about it. It got me up the hills in the snow, it keeps me cool in the summer, the rear seats aren't too cramped, and has decent airflow to the back. The glove box is tiny though. Decent sized boot, decent handling, though a little suspension tweaking makes it even better. It handles ok, but it is a little heavy, and it's rather thirsty as it makes such a nice sound when you boot it, it's hard not to boot it all the time! :D

Really happy with it I must say. At 42k miles on the clock it's just bedding in but feels tight and comfortable. I'm due to change it this year as this was only meant to be a stop gap and besides I much prefer RWD cars (though I may be gettign a company car so that may be a moot point anyway).

The one flaw this has, is the turning circle is rubbish!

Still massively tempted by a red 156 GTA down here. £8.5k and 40k miles on the clock iirc, great nick. Still havent been able to shift the Leon though i've got someone coming round at 6 tonight to test-drive it.
