ST220 wanted....questions

Basic Info

They were facelifted in late 2003 (iirc the facelifts will be 2004 on 53 plates) and received a revised interior and a 6 speed gearbox. The only thing that really changed was the centre console, rest of the interior remained the same.

After that, the next facelift came on the 2006 55 plate when it got the chrome splashed about, and the revised lights (with the white stripes) and the revised front grille.

Mechnically they're all the same apart from the change from 5 speed to 6 speed gearbox which apparently is stronger but ive yet to actually speak to anybody who had a 5 speed fail on them.

Crucial question, have you actually driven one ? go take a test drive, i test drove one and couldnt get on with it, other owners have commented that they two found the same thing - its a nice refined car, but has no real sensation of accleration. You look at the speedo, and you are going fast, but you never real feel it.

Go take a test drive and see how you find it, but i found it a bit dull to drive for my liking. Good, but dull.

thats because its n/a turbos always feel fast because theres nothing nothing nothing then boom a great big sudden increase in torque

must say the st220 doesn't feel all that quick, as it is fairly linear as the revs rise, you get a fair bit more grunt as you get over 4500 rpm. It just sounds glorious and I would say is definitely a modern classic. Especially for the price you can buy them for now!

Crazy money!

I don't expect to be paying what the dealer has asked to be truthful but all depends. Are you saying that paying £9,000 for anything but a new shape Mondeo is crazy? :)

Yes - there are numerous nice ST220's for several thousand pounds less so why pay that much?

I plan to keep it for quite a while (always have my cars around 4 years or so if they are good - so far anyway) and I tend to like ones with low mileage and fairly new. This one is a 2006 with sub 25,000 miles and yeah I know I could save a few thousand by getting an older one with more miles but for me it's a fair amount to invest so I would prefer something as new as I can get.

Unless of course you were meaning one that new and I'm just looking in the wrong places :)

+1 for considering the Focus

You can pick them up for as little as around £9k for a good one with a half decent spec, about the same you were contemplating going up to on the Mundeo.

I wouldn't have ever thought about the ST220 if I didn't end up feeling that up to £14,000 for the ST-3 I wanted was too much for the next year or so realistically. All the ones around that sort of price I'm finding have either been used heavily in their short life or aren't '3' which is what I would want should I ever get one. I'd take an RS over all of them but I have family to consider...shame :)

What is it about the '3' that you you cannot live without? The Leather or the 6CD Changer?

These two things wouldn't even come close to being a factor if it was them or the car I actually wanted.

When you look at it that way I suppose the extras probably aren't worth the hike people ask for. £10-11k for an ST-2 with around 25-30,000 is fair - I've taken into account the extra I would be paying per year for an ST220 over my current 206 GTI (a fair amount!) and with the cost of the car I wouldn't really be able to stretch any further which is a bit of a shame as I wanted the ST in the first place.

I'm looking through Autotrader and finding slightly older, higher mileage 5Dr ST-2s for as little as £8k.

If i didnt need a 4 door family saloon, i know where my 9k would go

Dealer is a member on the VXRforums, very amicable and certainly has a very good reputation amongst us. Not saying he's a saint, as i havent met him in person, but theres been a lot of cars sold / bought there by members and never has there been any negative feedback.

yoooo hoooo

;)

Yes, its certainly nice, but I believe the OP stated he needed something for family?

But if he doesn't then yes, buy that car MrLOL linked to.
