Currently awaiting a RMA return from EVGA, which chance's are isn't gonna happen since I was stupid and didn't get the package tracked and they don't seem to have managed to deliver it. In any case, fed up of not having my regular computer for use so in the mean-time debating between buying a cheap gfx card to make it operational and trying the oven trick on a faulty 8800 gtx.

In case I do decide to buy a cheapo one, wanted to know which one of the following is my best bet. Since it is a temp. card (i'l buy a proper one once it is 100% that the card is lost), all it needs to do is be able to run windows. (win 7 - 64 bit) If games work, great. If not, not an issue. I don't really want to spend more than 10-15 quid since it is a very temp. card. I found these on a site.

ATI Radeon X300 SE 256MB PCI-E - £10.00

Nvidia GeForce 7200 GS 128MB PCI-E - £12.00

Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT 128MB PCI-E - £12.00

Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT 256MB PCI-E - £15.00

ATI Radeon X800 GTO 128MB PCI-E - £15.00

ATI Radeon X1550 256MB PCI-E - £15.00

All are second-hand I think. In case anyone has other recommendations for this price range, then open to suggestions. Resolution they'l be used at is 1920x1200 and have 2 gb of 6400 c4 ram in the computer. Motherboard is EVGA 780i ***. Just needs to manage windows easily, preferably with all the nice effects.

wouldn't waste the money mate....buy a 4850 card....use it...then sell it when you get your card back...you'll take a hit of about £20-30 in resale cost but better than any of the above

sorry I should have read the rest of your post :D

I thought you were looking to play games with it as opposed to just booting up. No onboard GFX no?

Well you'll either be playing games with them or not playing games. So, for windows, any of them. For games, none of them. If I had to choose I'd go with the 7300gt 256mb. Should work with Windows Aero.

Sudden, where about in London are you? I've got a ATI card collecting dust, it is an el cheapo card but should be fine for Windows. I'll give it to you if you want, no cost.

Thanks mate. That's very generous of you! Would love to take you up on it. :) I'm in northwest london and am in central during the day on weekdays. Any of that good for you?

Could you let me know which model it is exactly and confirm that it'l run windows 7 64 bit, won't have problems with aero and will play videos without stuttering? (just regular stuff. no 720p or anything). Oh and how does it compare to the stuff listed?

Sorry for all the questions, especially since you're doing me a massive favour, but don't want to put you to trouble needlessly :)

I'll put the card through these tests tonight and will let you know. Location is fine I am always around these areas. I never used the card myself my little brother gave it to me to replace my 8600GT but I never used it.

Hmmm, the card is working as I can boot into windows with it, it is an ATI as far as I can tell but it dees not have a model number on it and searching the various numbers on the card got no results.

I did try various ATI legacy drivers but they did not work. You are more than welcome to take the card off from me if you want and if you manage to find the correct driver for it you save a bit of cash you were going to spend.

Sure then, will give it a try :) As you said, if it works, I save some cash ^_^. If not, not out anything I wasn't planning to spend anyway. Is tomorrow any good for you? (Thursday) or too short notice?

Also, would you be interested in a steam voucher code for half life 2: episode 1 as a thank you?

The X800 will be the fastest card out of the lot.

Just out of curiosity now, why would that one be better than say the 7300 GT given the higher res I want to play at and the lower memory that the x800 has? I thought more was better at higher resolutions?

Whoops! I didn't read 128MB RAM.

If the X1550 is anything close to an X1600, then that'd be the one to go for, however, I can't help you with that. IF it's not, then the 7300 will be the one to get.

Hi, I can meet you around Euston station or Highgate Station on Friday evening, hopefully these locations are ok for you. Let me know if they are not.

I would be more than welcome to accept the voucher code for Half Life 2 as a thank you :)

Euston sounds great. What time were you thinking? I can do pretty much whenever after 2:15 :p Just outside the escalators leading up from the tube?
