Ok so I currently have a
600w OCZ Tech PSU
2x SATA HDD 500GB HDD
Intel C2D E7200 @ 3Ghz
Nvidia 8800GT 512Mb
XFI Fatality sc
2xDVD RW Drives
Gigabyte P35 Mobo

out of this I am willing to spend £620 on a new system upgrade.
The case I currently have is around 3 years old standard ATX form factor however I wish to upgrade to DDR3, I was told i7 is a bit overkill for me as i intend to use it on the newer games, I was thinking AM3 Phenom black edition quads? can anyone suggest a new upgrade to this system, is there any point getting a new case, new psu? or is 600w substantial for 1 GPU?

Thanks,

Your system could probably be upgraded with a newer Intel quad core and graphics card. If you have an OCZ StealthXStream 600W you could get an HD5850 1GB.
I would look for a secondhand Q9550 for under £150 if your motherboard can handle one.

mobo seriously sucks on this computer haha xD, which is why i'm trying to work out if it would just be better to get a phenom as opposed to staying C2D or upgrading to C2Q (which doesn't seem possible =/)

anywho what would you say then a 5850 1gb? or crossfire 5770 with this upgrade:

If you want to get an AMD based system this is what I would look at getting:

AMD Phenom II X4 955BE ~ £122

asus m4a785td-v evo ~ £73

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=mb-355-as&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1481

has an 8+2 phase vrm,vrm cooling, all solid capacitors and integrated graphics

or

asus m4a79xtd evo ~£86

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=mb-366-as&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1481

has an 8+2 phase vrm,vrm cooling, all solid capacitors and can do symmetrical crossfire at pci-e 2.0 8x

4gb 1600mhz ddr3 ~ £83

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=my-026-pa&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517

hd5850 1gb ~ £230

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=gx-122-pc

or

2xhd5770 1gb ~ £226

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=gx-131-ok

you can only go for the pair of hd5770 1gb cards if you get the asus m4a79xtd evo.

a pair of hd5770 1gb cards can surpass even an hd5870 1gb:

the hd5770 1gb has lower power consumption than a 9800gt:

IMHO,the OCZ 600W should be fine for a pair of HD5770 1GB graphics cards.

If you have some decent DDR2 already you can get an AM2+ motherboard instead:

This motherboard also has an 8+2 phase VRM,VRM cooling, all solid capacitors and can do symmetrical Crossfire at PCI-E 2.0 8X.

If you do go for a Core i5 however it would be useful to read this article first:
