Looking for a bit of advice to buy a pc for my daughter to play the sims 3, id ideally like to get a full system including monitor, keyboard and mouse which all dont have to be fancy, for about £400.

Thats literally the only game she would play.

To get a monitor, keyboard, mouse, operating system? and the rig for £400 may be hard. I'd probably go with a laptop if you can find a decent one but I'll try and help more later as I'm just going out.

the periferals would eat up too much of the budget where as getting a laptop would leave you with a higher spec machine overall

The monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers and windows will be at least £200 leaving only £200 for the actual PC itself

Not sure if you can even build one for £200

maybe a Pentium dual core, motherboard and ram for £100 and then maybe case, psu, hdd and optical for another £100

Then you need another £50 for a graphics card

Don't think you can do it..............what about second hand?

+1 too the laptops.

if you went for the pc with £400 youd loose more than £100 for monitor/peripherals etc.

She's already got a laptop and its broken, she dosent look after things too well, thats why i want her to get a desktop.

I should have said, i already have the operating system, can probably drop the monitor off and use her 26" LCD for that too if need be.

This is what I would get:

Athlon II X2 245 ~ £50

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-251-AM

I would try to fit an Athlon II X3 425 or 435 for under £60 into the build specification if possible!

Asus M4A78L-M LE ~ £47

The total comes to around £403 excluding delivery.

that build has no case, and no wireless adapter either (if required). would also need speaker, keyboard and mouse; not that i can suggest anything better! but just saying lol

you could maybe swap out the ram for 2gb of 800mhz @ £47.

Corsair XMS2 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 6400C4 TwinX Dual Channel (TWIN2X2048-6400C4G) [TWIN2X2048-6400C4 G]
£46.99 inc VAT

Then with the £24:
Asus TA-K51 Case - Black (No PSU) £20.42
(£17.38) £20.42
(£17.38)
Creative Inspire 245 2.0 Speaker System (51MF1565AA002) £11.99
(£10.20) £11.99
(£10.20)
Microsoft Black PS/2 Keyboard (Q95-00086) £6.12
(£5.21) £6.12
(£5.21)
Logitech S96 PS/2 Optical Wheel Mouse Black - OEM (953688-1600) £5.99
(£5.10) £5.99
(£5.10)
Sub Total : £37.89

you could also get £10 from dropping the GFX to a 4650 card too

Laptop...pfff ;)

I have a couple of teenage nephews who *love* laptops.

There is nothing a teenager likes more than sprawling out on the sofa, with the TV on (naturally), the lappy on their lap, using msn to talk to all their mates.

Much more teen friendly than a rigid desktop computer imho ;)

Many adults also do the same.

My girlfriend just got a cool laptop with a 4570 in and it's good enough to play plenty of games. I was playing dawn of war 2 on it and having fun (other than the sh*tty touch pad). When we thought there was £400 including the monitor then laptops would have weighed in as the best option easily. Now not so much.

It should ensure she has the game at a slightly nicer frame rate and DX11 if Sims 3 has it.
