Corsair H50

Funnily enough, I've just seen this:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=15788822&postcount=641

Which is the same board, with the H50 mounted, you can see the pump connector going to top right of the board, which is the pwr_fan(98% on name) header, so I'm assuming I got it right in the first place..

I can only assume it's seated it's self incorrectly, although the little teeth on the bracket are in place correctly, and it's screwed down as much as you would, so effectivly the threads have bitten together tight together, and then a notch more.

=] Strange, can't see how I managed that, but will strip it off and review the situation when I get home in about 30minutes, in regards to cleaning off the pre-applied paste and using some as5 for reseating, is this going to be fine if it does turn out to need RMAing?? Or will they consider this a modification to the unit in terms of it not working properly. Sounds like a stupid question and I'm going to assume it doesn't but can never be too careful :p

took it off, reseated it with as5, hooked it all back up, and like it was the very first time, it's now showing the power speed fan as 1400 rpm, which is the pump, and the fan as 1700 rpm which is the rad, so now it's sitting in the bios as 27.5c mb temp 22c

gonna leave it 20mins and see if it suddenly ramps up along with a couple of reboots, i cant imagine, not that i can even remember doing so, a little nudge whilst installing dvd-rw/hdd would have caused that. imagine taking it to lans getting there n realising that lol

surprise surprise.. made sure not to touch anything other then plugging in the other couple of fans and the hdd/dvd-r rebooted went in to bios, and no pwr_fan detected and cpu temps ramping up at silly speeds. hmm this is rather strange..

EDIT: how interesting, powered down, removed kettle lead and turned psu off at switch, remove dvd-r/hdd and the couple of fans and re hooked up and it's now booted back and working ok... so something isnt quite right with one of the connections somewhere, thank heavens the h50 is ok, or seems it!

EDIT2: it would seem that when plugged in to the second modular sata port on the psu (nearest the fixed cables) the pump doesn't work, the drive displays in the bios, but nothing from the pump?? wtf??

Something I have found which hasn't been mentioned in this thread about the H50 is it's really loud!

My machine is an all in one gaming/work/HTPC so I really wanted a quiet PC and chose my specs accordingly.

The case is an Antec 1200 which is whisper quiet, the graphics is an BFG 8800GTX, also whisper quiet...but the H50 fan makes a hell of a background racket...

It's a constant drone and you can make out the slight throbbing of the fan...it's not a problem if you are in a game or watching a film, but for general net browsing it's a real pain! :(

Until I read this last post, I was sold on the H50!
Is this true, is it really loud ? If so are there any similar quiet alternatives??

I was sold on it as well which is why I bought based on reviews, I even looked at reviews which specifically talked about noise and it didn't seem to be listed as a problem.

The main thing with it is you can't put it on any intelligent fan settings, it has to be belting along at full pelt all the time.

I don't want you to get the wrong idea, it's not like a Delta fan or anything near the sort, just if you want a quiet system, avoid it.

There are a couple of whopping great cpu coolers, one of which I believe you can clip your own 120mm fan onto the side (so you can pick a quiet one), but I'm not sure of the name offhand. One of the reasons I got the H50 was because I didn't want a big weight pulling on the motherboard over a prolonged period.

It's difficult to choose isn't it, you will probably find you have to compromise on at least one specification otherwise you will never pick one!

I'd love to hear other peoples experiences with the H50 and noise as well, it's possible I've got one that's on the loud side and others may have quieter ones.

there's a long thread on the cooling forum re: the H50 which I'm reading at the moment which make sme think buying it anmd replacing the fan it comes with is probably the route to go for near silent running

Ah, good to hear I haven't got a faulty one then.

Would you mind linking to that thread please and I'll have a good look at it myself!

Thanks :)

Errr... what kind of h50 do you have?? the fan that comes with it is a PWM regulated fan (that's why it has a four pin connector... pulse width modulation controls the speed of the fan as opposed to voltage regulation). Yes, at full pelt, it's a 1700 rpm fan (which is going to be loud), but it doesn't need to be running at full pelt the whole time - although admittedly, I have no idea how loud the fan is at it's lowest rpm (don't actually use it).

Even if it was a voltage regulated fan (three pin)... you could still control the speed "intelligently".

yeah the pump is next to silent, the only noise is the fan on the rad, thats up to you how quiet you want to make that, i'd go with a good quality quiet fan running at a decent speed to make sure the rad stays cool.

now i've solved my issue, im in love with it :D idled 26c in windows for about 4 hours whilst doing updates and what not..

From what I remember (been a couple of months since it was built), I read that you couldn't have any quiet fan settings on it, it had to be running at full pelt all the time, the instructions said to turn off any fan management...if I have made a mistake somewhere I would love to hear about it!

Sounds good! What fan would you recommend using with it? I'll pay virtually anything for a quiet life lol.

here's the link to the H50 thread I've been reading on the cooling forum - seems that there's mostly praise for it but that it can be a pain to fit!

Thanks very much for the link, I'll have a good read of the thread!

Um well I swapped out the rear fan in the CM690-11 case in favour of the one Corsair supply with the unit, which for me, once It's cased up and what not I don't consider it too noisy, if your not happy with the fan it's supplied with,

I was going to suggest a select couple of leading 120m fans, but i'd suggest just browsing through the selection:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=701&catid=57&subid=4

And see what fits the theme of the case, if you're bothered about that, and then what seems best to you..

H50 Pump is silent, Ive got mine plugged into the 3pin northbridge and its running at 1400RPM. Replaced the Corsair fan with the 4pin Apache PWM and a bequiet fan (in pull) running on molex, the rear fan runs on full (fairly quiet) and the apache doesnt start spinning till it loads windows and keeps my temps down well starting at 300RPM and going upto 1400RPM on full load. so the amd cool and quiet works with H50 as long as the pump speed is constant which it is on mine. :D

You're a little mixed up there I'm afraid. You want to turn of speed management on the pump, but the fan(s) can be managed.

Ah ha! I'm very happy to be corrected!!! :D

OK...ummm, how do I go about doing that?

IIRC, I just disabled the Gigabye equivilant of Q-Fan (I'm used to Asus boards normally), and manually adjusted the case fans.

Hmmmm, I just plugged the pump into the PWR 3 pin mobo header. This seems to run the pump at full whack, not that it is audible. With Noctua NF12 fans I'm getting 7-800rpm at idle, pretty much silent.

I have the pump plugged into 'system fan 3' on the motherboard.

The fan is plugged into the CPU fan.

I'm not sure whether that setup would allow me to enable any sort of fan control or if I shouldn't risk it.

With the Noctua fan installed do you have that running at full whack silently or have you toned it down?
