PC not been cleaned for over a year now and fans are getting louder. Probably build up of dust so what is recommended here?

Compressed Air @ £4/400ml

vs

AC Air Pump (Sidewinder AC Air Pump) @ £9.99

With the Air pump I will have an infinite supply of air and will only need to buy one.

What advantage does compressed air have?
What disadvantage does an air pump have?

take it to your local garage and ask them to stick the air line on it. Im quite forunate that I have a compressor in the garage and it works a treat..plooms of dust in the sky LOL

I'm fairly sure that any compressor capable of blowing dust out of a PC as effectively as canned air is going to cost a lot more than £9.99. Unless you can try before you buy I’d stick with the canned option.

If you're going to be using compressed air on a regular basis then the compressors intended for use with airbrushes may be an option (and cost a lot more than £9.99).

If someone has found a cheap compressor that does a decent job of blowing dust out of PCs I'd be interested in the details.

Many years ago I did have a cheap airbrush type sprayer that used a car wheel and tyre as an air reservoir. You pumped the tyre up to about 50psi and then connected the hose from the sprayer to the wheel valve. You got about 2 minutes of spraying before you had to pump the type up again.

If your using a regular air compressor you will need to wind the it down to around 50PSI as blowing it out with 200PSI can be a little dicey as it spins the fans up way past what the bearings are rated at.

or just put your finger on the fan to stop it spinning while you blow the dust away :)

Personaly I find 'air in a can' to be utterly useless.
A fork is good for removing dust from heatsinks, other than that just use fingers to rub the dust off fan blades etc.

Haha a fork?!?! That is the most random cleaning object I have ever heard of :D.

I find that compressed air is very good as you can focus the pressure in hard to reach areas and it cleans all the dust out very well. The downside is that it is quite expensive and doesn't last that long :(.

The low pressure AC Air pump is the best value. It's the one I use. Can't see the point of buying can after can of compressed air!

I use a clean dry paintbrush to loosen everything up then I have an air bed inflator to blow the dust out all over the floor for teh mrs to clean up :D

If I remember correctly, quite a few other people recommended an "air bed" style pump from a popular high street retailer (one with a catalogue) for cleaning their PCs. I think it was fairly cheap too.
