It's been that way for a long time, even before I moved from Northern Ireland. Over there we called them "spides", and I really did laugh the day I heard one of them refer to a normal person as such.

In essence, it's their attempt to "take it back" - ie. refer to anyone unlike them as that specific term.

Erm, no - the term was derived to describe your specific societal entity.

Yeah what is with that, my girlfriend (she's Nirish) calls em that. No idea why though.
