Don McLean’s American Pie

For many years this used to be my opening song when I was duo'ing on the circuit.

It is important to know that Don McLean has NEVER confirmed any of the explanations of American Pie so anything that is said is just hearsay.

Apparently American Pie was the airplane that Buddy Holly died in (perhaps, maybe).

there has never been a time where it has been easier to track down real musicians offers accross all genres and internationally - yes the chart stuff is rubbish but since the charts have existed the pooh has always floated to the surface.

Only a lazy music fan would pine for the good old days - all of that fantastic music still exists and much more fantastic music is being written everyday. The difference is it is now easier to find and listen to than ever. Quit whining.

Those good meaningful, non Simon Cowell produced songs would in the past stand a chance in main charts, which was the only original point I was making. Think about it - it took a massive grassroots campaign through Facebook (on their second attempt) to knock him off the top. A song on its own merit isn't enough, which again, was the point I was making, nothing to do with the "pooh floating to the surface".

I do agree that the internet, online catalogues and archives and e.g. Amazon's music range etc. have made it easier to find and listen. I'm a trance fan and taking note of songs, particularly those that aren't released in the UK is trouble free. Taking what you said a bit further though, it could be said in this day and age those aforementioned groups which don't succeed in the charts find it harder to stick around.

Hence my quite about music dieing on the 3rd Feb 1959 ;)

But it may not be true.
McLean has hinted the opening verse may be about Buddy Holly but never confirmed it but he has never confirmed any of the other translations of his work.
It would be really funny if on his deathbed everybody had got it wrong.

Quite a lot of it is just imagary from the 60's, it's just a lot of people & events strung together into a rough narrative with little or no meaning (apart from the music dying which is almost unquestionably BH).
