Given some series I've seen killing off half the main characters and the love interest, I dont see how much worse Saikana could be that much worse??
.

Lets put it this way, if Fate Stay was a 5 on the scale of 1-10 for sad, Saikano is probably about a 9 (Grave of the Fireflies whilst great would probably be about a 10, as right from the first scene you know that the main characters die*).
It took me a couple of attempts to watch it.

Now and then, here and there (great series) is almost as bad at points, and really quite uncomfortable to watch at times (I remember when the first disk originally came out in the states and people were saying they wouldn't be buying the rest of the series after what happened in about episode 2 or 3), but not quite as sad in the end.

*I bought the R1 original release about 5 years ago, then the UK 2 disk release about 3 years ago and have only managed to watch it once (the UK release was opened just to make sure it had the right discs).

To be fair I dont think Fate Stay is the 'saddest' anime I've watched, its just the most recent which is why it got brought up after a long line of shows that seemed unable to find a happy ending haha, my main bone with Fate Stay is I didnt think they tied it up very well, when there was better material available to do so already, and the audio.

I might actually have to watch Saikano now at some point just to see what everyone is talking about :) Never heard of N&T,H&T, and I haven't seen Grave of the Fireflies, but it does remind me of the [game] Eternal Sonata in that premise, so perhaps I'll look into those a little later also, after I've watched some slightly more light-hearted stuff like the other shows mentioned already. :)

Thanks for the recommendations by the way, I have enough trouble admitting to myself I like some anime, without going and asking say my younger brother :D

Fate/stay night is pretty sad, but definitely not up there with the likes of Clannad AS, Saikano and GotF. I love sad anime, here's where I rate them in terms of sadness:

Fate/stay night - 6/10 (I still adore this series, it's one of my favourites but it isn't that sad really)
Kanon 8/10
Clannad 8/10
Clannad AS 9/10
Saikano 9.5/10
Grave of the Fireflies 9.5/10
Planetarian 543,246,984/10

Actually, just thinking about how much sad anime there is makes me wonder if we're all closet emo's or something :p
And how much higher than the national average the suicide rate for anime fans is in Japan, and if there is a spike after the end of a really sad series :p

I thought the ending of fate Stay night was fairly sound, little sad in its result but I also think that it showed how important the 'competition' and her honour was to Saber.

As to suggestions I'm going to stick with those on the other page
Rozen Maidens
Fate Stay Night - you've just seen it
Claymore
Chronicles of Tsubasa
Elemental Gelade
and raise it my usual fare of
Eureka Seven (series not movie)
Zoids Genesis
Black Lagoon (as mentioned - its 2 box sets at present)
Mezzo - hard to describe
Rahxephon - bit of a thinker anime but good
Vadread (I even prefer this in english and I'm a Japanese voice only viewer usually)

Werewolf - they've had people die from playing WoW so I'd say the statistics could be quite high

I've got Rahxephon on my Lovefilm list already so good to see its at least recommendable.
I'll take a look at some of that other stuff too and see what I like the look of, not adverse to mecha at all, so might see if there are any good mecha mixs I haven't seen (beyond Evangelion and the others mentioned recently in the thread - I would go look but this topic is HUGE), Gundam Wing and then a year or two later Full Metal Panic were my first anime, and both had doses of humour, although noticeably more in FMP's case. :)

I see what you mean about the ending of FSN, I agree it did show how central to the core those principles were to Arthuria, however given the emotions the writers had tried to add as the series grew, whilst sacrifice was also core to her character, a reward in death/slight glimmer of happiness in the epilogue would have been a slightly more...fulfilling ending IMO, whereas the normal ending almost implies that no matter what you sacrifice and how strong/wise/etc you become, it'll never be enough. The whole last episode thing for the PS2 edition carried that off, without interfering with the current ending. Guess thats just me though, a bit of a sap for a love story :)

Werewolf: SNIP

Yeah does make you wonder! Still if the sad ones are for the emo kids, probably why Im not so keen on them! I'll let you find statistics on Japanese death rates though, to see if there are any surges at the end of sad anime runs :p

I'd probably put Kanon a bit higher than Clannad AS; AS does have some really emotionally intense arcs but also has the intense highs as well .... Kanon though is blam blam blam. Of the Air, Kanon, and Clannad (including AS) three series I feel that the Clannad series' are the most balanced in their highs and lows. I'd agree that FSN is only around the middle though, I'd even put the end of Chrono Crusade higher.

I'd probably give Grave of the Fireflies something around the 15-16 mark though :)

Given the Wikipedia definition of emo of "being particularly emotional, sensitive, shy, introverted, or angst-ridden" I'd say quite probably (without the dodgy clothes and poor taste in music though). I think that it's fairly obvious from my tastes expressed elsewhere in this thread that one of the reasons I like watching anime is the emotional involvement you can get in some of the series ... not necessarily the depressive elements as you get the good times too. I like to have characters who I can emphasise with and go through their highs and lows ;) I also find I've been reading/watching far to many shoujo titles lately

I do tend to find it easier to get caught up in what's going on over live action series/films. I can see why Japanese fans may get so involved that they top themselves but I would certainly hope we're not quite at that level here :D

Anyway; Read the second volume of Kimi ni Todoke today which was good (******* that's a shoujo title :p) .... right I'm off to watch some big mecha beat the you know what out of some other mecha (phew!)

I'd agree that FSN is only around the middle though, I'd even put the end of Chrono Crusade higher.

No disagreements there, that was definately a poignant ending even if it could have been worse, especially as after they're found dead, you then get the kick in the nuts that Aion probably wasn't truly beaten, despite them sacrificing thier lives to his defeat.
FSN at least offered the fact the 'baddies' were beaten.

I actually quite enjoyed Chrno Crusade...a lot more than I was expecting to. The second half of the series was very different to the early part as well.

well eureka seven has mecha but is more slice of life/love story
zoids genesis - again has mecha but more of a story than the others
Vandread (correct spelling) - in space, kind of has a mech, its more of a harem style anime though in my opinion.
rahxephon is often compared to evangelion but I don't think it should be, it has similarities yes (hell so does gundam) but it can stand it's ground in my view.
and if you want to go completely away from mecha, rozen maidens has living dolls :D

obviously don't want to give too much away but the conversation at the very end between sabre and one of her soldiers shows she was content.

You know there is still the Fate/Stay Night movie which is based on the Unlimited Blade Works scenario of the game and was released in Japanese cinemas last month. Now we will just have to wait for the DVD/Blu-Ray.

I know the bit, although I took it to cover she was now (again not wanting to spoil to much) at ease with her past deeds and no longer wished to be able to change those deeds.

During that same conversation though she also mentioned her dream, and expressed a desire to be able to return to that dream, which sounds like a small last regret in its own way. The whole way it pulled off pretty much alluded to her returning if she had been able to.

The Last Episode epilogue offers something in that vein, a reward for effort and conviction if you will, which is why I believe it would have been a more fulfilling ending; especially if Shirou actually acted like he hadn't somehow found a way to purge all emotion in a short space of time haha. From reading around people seem fairly convinced that the Last Episode unlock was meant to be the real ending to the fate arc [rather than the others where it didnt really fit], even if it was ambiguous, which is another reason I think it would have made a better ending as it still leaves things open, stating they are involved in further stories, but adds some solid closure, and some true happiness at the end :)

@Phat
Unlimited Bladeworks from my understanding is basically a completely different 'telling' of the story, so due to that different scenario it cant really be considered a continuation or anything, as loads of stuff changes. The Hollow Ataraxia (sp?) sounds to be in a similar vein, again kinda covering why I felt FSN's ending could have been given a more fulfilling closure.

edit: As you've said about the dream - I was actually thinking of how bedevere says she can go back to it etc and also the fact it was insightful etc. It left it open ended enough for a person to think that she's gone back to the dream of a happier place not that she regrets her decisions. But then a good anime should leave the viewer with options/own opinions on the end outcome (also leaves it just open enough for a second season) :)

Unlimited looks quite different, I've seen the trailer and it's got a completely different vibe, like how eureka seven was re-envisaged to pocketful of rainbows (or whatever they renamed it to). Still want to see it in the same way I watched e7's movie which would have probably been a good movie if I hadn't seen the series.

It is, it's just a different scenario route from the game, but the point is, it will depend on which ending they will take as there are multiple ones afterall.

.

See, now I took that line a bit differently, I took it as her trying to give hope/happiness to her friend, right to the end, rather than really believing it, like you tell a person in a bad car crash its going to be ok, but in your heart of hearts you know it won't. So you get Saber content that she has fulfilled her vows, but in her final moments she wishes she could could return to the dream, and Bedivere tries to give her some last hope :)

Its true I guess we both just have different perspectives on this, you see everything as content, where I see it more as content with a small hint of regret/a final wish, which is why I wish the a slightly better epilogue had been adapted.

Incase you wondered what the last episode ending I've mentioned a few times is, it's this:

Especially part 3, kinda like a summed up version almost with a better ending set in the future after they've died. :)
Bit awkward to read mind as its fan translated rather than a professional job :)

Yeah, 3 arcs, with multiple routes isn't it?
What I was geting at though is each of those scenario routes are different, the characters change and so does the course of events, so even if they base another show on another arc, its not really a true sequel as it wont carry events from the first series on, its pretty much a seperate story, rather than a second season, which that Hollow Ataraxia seems to be going for, but seems to be changing a lot as well, so its sort of a semi-sequel.

I think I prefer the Last Episode way of the FSN route ending :)

The sad thing is I really love that series, but I will never watch it again because I just can't handle that ending again.

It really was quite heart breaking I thought. :( Poor guts/casca.

Tried watching Ergo Proxy the other weekend .... didn't really think much to what I saw (first 8 or so episodes) but I'll have another go at it eventually.

Havn't begun to watch it yet but I'll let you know how I feel once I do. :)

Ergo Proxy isn't really "messed up", Texhnolyze however, is.

I've only watched one episode of Texhnolyze as of yet. I loved it though. The crazier the better with me. I watched Serial Experiments Lain. So glad Texhnolyze is done by the same producers.

I also have Speed Grapher to watch. Watched couple years ago when I was 14/15 need to re watch it now though. Quite a strange show if I remember.

I've never been a huge anime fan, but have loved some movies (Princess Mononoke, Vexille, Wonderful Days) and watched a few shows (Cyber City Oedo 808, AD Police, Golden Boy)

Any recommendation for modern shows set in the cyberpunk/future theme? More action orientated, with little nudity (will be watching on the tube).

If you want Cyberpunk you cannot go wrong with Bubblegum Crisis, the 2040 version (late 90's, early 00's TV series) is almost nudity free, but the 2032 OVA from the late 80's is definitely the better version, but has a few breasts.
The downside is the animation from the 2032 is showing it's age a bit (but it is still pretty good), but it is very definitely cyberpunk and has a lot of reference's to Bladerunner (right down to the name of one of the characters, and her band).

[edit]
I see you say modern ones.

That's possibly a little harder, possibly Heat Guy J?

Obligatory Cowboy Bebop recommendation. It has a couple of cyberpunk-ish episodes and the whole thing is future themed... and it's probably one of the most well liked animes ever, so you can't go far wrong.

edit: I like how someone has listed Ergo Proxy as 'cyberpunk' on Wikipedia.... why?
