Which little car is best?

Really? What about Insurance and Tax? Or running costs being leagues apart?

You don't read the thread properly, spout absoulte nonsense and then decide to agree with the point you originally fought tooth and nail against? Good Game .

Excuse me??

The opening post does not mention anything about distances and just simply states a small car with low tax and insurance being the main priority does it not? I simply posted my GF has a 107 and was giving my thought on said car, I did not see it has to do 90+miles daily YES OF COURES THIS CHANGES THINGS.

Some right set of pretentious nobs on here.

Settledown has pretty much only ever used Motors since he arrived here. Whilst we are glad to have him thats unusual, most people migrate to Motors after using other areas of the forum - after all, its not a place you'd discover or think to look for a little car forum is it, a computer hardware shop?

I wonder if he has been here before and is a returnee ;)

Carry on MR detective, see how far you get. Be my guest.

I'd say a Fiesta is about as small as i'd be willing to go for a 90 mile a day commute, but even then it's hardly ideal.

Focus/Golf/Leon/A3/1 Series is where i'd be looking, you should be able to get a very good example of any of those for £10K.

Nah, I'm no good at the detective stuff, must say the response was interesting though :p

I don’t get this place I really don’t!! :D I have only posted a few times in here to voice my 'OPINION' yes that’s all it is at the end of the day and nothing more. Its seems far too serious.

Anyway I’m not here to make enemies.

The opening post is pretty much irrelevant. You knew how much the distance was (You quoted the original poster in post #22, where it clearly states that the car will be used on a 80 mile+ Journey every day) and despite this you still spouted little gems like:
"500 is the one to go for"
"Small cars out there do the job just perfectly."

And then when people make suggestions of a reasonably sized family hatchback you reply with:

"Tax and insurance fella
" - If you cannot afford the £100 extra in tax and the negligible difference in insurance between a "Small car" and a reasonably sized hatchback you simply cannot afford to own a car.

"the other cars you mentioned are in a different league both in running costs" - See above.

Then I assume you actually read the post you quoted earlier and the penny dropped?

Ok I did not see the 90+mile commute yes a small car like a 107, 500 is pointless. I agree a focus or similar size car is better suited like a TDCi as you mentioned :)

And in one great swoop you contradict yourself completely. As I said before, good game.

Are you Jessica Fletcher?? What is the point of this post, what are you trying to prove? I’m not even going to entertain to give you a serious reply, I’m just going to sit here and laugh!

To be fair we do as well, last time we had a small car thread he tried to recommend a 1989 Peugeot 205 1.4 Automatic.

Aaaaaaaaanyway, to answer the OP the best little car is the Fiat 500. However given your OH's actual requirements something like this or this would fit the bill far better.

I was under the impression that the 1.9TDI was reliable, but sounded horrible and vibrated a lot compared to the 2.0TDI?

Good call on the Civic though! Got to say, i really like them. Plenty of gadgets, good looking interior, modern, reliable. The only thing i don't like is that stupid front clear plasticy bit.

However, you're much more likely to get a good Civic at 8-9k than you will a Golf/A3.

Being a bit of a 205 geek I know a 1.4 auto doesn't even exist. You could only get a 1.6 or 1.9 auto.

You're right, however I couldn't find a reasonable 2.0 unless you max the budget and TBH I couldn't bring myself to recommend a £10k diesel runabout. Even £8k is a fair whack for how this car will actually be used.

I did look for some A3s but there was nothing at all in budget - at least nothing worth having that wasn't poverty spec.

The 2.2 Civic actually looks quite nice and is more than quirky and girly enough :)

Out of the original criteria, I'd go for the 500. Just done this research for myself and came to that conclusion. The 500 is a little cheap car, but somehow doesn't feel like it when you are sat in it. It's also very cute :D

If, however, I was doing huge motorway commutes, I'd go a bit bigger. I'd be checking out a Yaris, Clio or maybe a Punto.....

I wouldn't be. A Yaris/Clio is hardly any bigger and not nearly as nice to drive on the motorway as a Family Hatchback.

A diesel Punto might be ok though.

If she must have new, then:

Kia Rio 2 1.5 CRDI - £9300 otr - £35 Tax - 62.8mpg combined - 7yr/100k mile warranty

At least then, whilst paying off the finance she will be covered by the warranty if she takes it over a longer period.

Fiat Panda if she can stand the fact it was beaten by the Ugly Stick as an infant. Fiat 500 otherwise - Mums just got one (1.4 16v Sport) and it's not actually too bad.

But these are all city cars.
They are not a good place to be for 90 miles a day.

Grande Punto is the smallest the OP should be looking at, and Fiats are very cheap new and nearly new, so I really think they're worth a look.
My aunt has had one from new and she hasn't had any problems with it at all, and she has a 90 mile motorway commute too.

I thought anything post 1990 was the spawn of satan?
