..is it worth it?

Makro for all it's promises never seems to be that cheap, I'm wondering if Costco is - the membership is £25+VAT per annum, we're being offered it at work.

I have Costco membership, and will be renewing it next year. Its worth it for me as they sell Mobil1 for £20, thats less than half price of everywhere else!

For some bulk stuff I go with a few mates, buy whatever we want in bulk and split it between us - that way you get the decent prices, but dont end up with a million litres of tomato sauce

One of the best things is the decent sized car parking spaces.
Also the hot chicken ready to eat, nom nom :), and you can buy a giant Peri Peri hot sauce for about £8, nom+1.

I won't be renewing my Costco membership this year because there is a Makro 5 mins away from Costco and there isn't too much of a difference in price. Makro you don't have to buy in bulk, with Costco you are possibly buying more than you actually 'need'.. so you end up spending more money in the long run?

Costco opened a store a few years ago up here in Newcastle/Metro Centre, and basicaly was no cheaper than anyone else and what was cheap was rubbish. Closed down with in the first year.

We have one down south, it's like any supermarket these days, if you happen to stumble across a bargain (within your normal shopping) then you're sorted. However that kind of thing is too random to make it part of a reason for choosing one store over another.

been a member since the derby store opened. Above is largely true nowadays, costco has been going steadily downhill in the last 5 years, unless your a convenieince store owner....

I call in about once a month now to do a bulk shop of day to day stuff, dog food. wash liquid etc. Most of it's no cheaper than shopping around, some is MORE expensive. Long gone are the days when I'd see something I wanted at a very good price and impulse buy. For example their IT stuff is horrendously over priced, the tv section used to be competetive with a great warranty but they've diluted the warranty on everything nowadays. I tend to combine the trip with other things like toys r us etc and usually have luch there.

If your local to one and even better could walk there in your lunch break, go for it. You'll recoup the £25+vat easily having luch there once a week. If not (like me) then I'd probably try it for a year and go from there.

IMO the meat and fish are of much better quality than any supermarket. We buy all our meat and fish there once a month, portion it all up and freeze it all. The muffins etc are also great and are huge. Also some of the wine (Rosemount) the wife gets is much better value than supermarkets.

Makro is great for the meat/fish.

It is far better than supermarket quality and better than local butcher quality. cheaper than both too..

Costco next to the Metro Centre is great for stocking up on meat, brilliant quality.

Don't know where oldphart got the idea it was closed from?

The meat there is great. Probably no cheaper than the supermarkets, but much better quality. The bakery products are really good as well - muffins, bagels, danish pastries etc as well as the cakes and deserts.

Some of the stuff is no cheaper than you can get elsewhere, but if you search around there are some real bargains to be had. They also stock some US products that are difficult to find elsewhere, such as really good peanut butter.

The cheesecake that they do is awesome, its massive and only £8.99:p

They are not that cheap, but the oil and microfibre cloths are always good value as are the Jalapeno peppers.
