Mark Coleman vs. Randy Couture (Going to be a great match up.. Hoping more than thinking Couture will win..)
Nate Marquardt vs. Chael Sonnen
Mike Swick vs. Paulo Thiago
Demian Maia vs. Dan Miller (Maia by submission)
Matt Serra vs. Frank Trigg (tough one, so evenly matched..)

i hope Coleman smashes Randy, the cage grinder couture.

seriously, randy is about the least exciting fighter you are likely to see, and this will get worse with time. he doesnt have the skills, so he simply plows his opponent into the cage over and over again until his opponents, and the fans lose the appetite for the fight.. and then pull out a dodgy decision victory based upon - Octagon control...watch the Vera fight for confirmation of this tactic.

Yeah its bit of a dull tactic Nickg.

Hard to pick between them tbh I watched the Shogun/Coleman fight and Coleman looked tired VERY early on so im not sure if his cardio will be upto it, mind you that was a while ago now wasnt it?

My picks...

Mark Coleman vs. Randy Couture
Nate Marquardt vs. Chael Sonnen
Mike Swick vs. Paulo Thiago
Demian Maia vs. Dan Miller
Matt Serra vs. Frank Trigg

Randy may not have been exciting in his last fight but you can't fault him for using the tools he has.

Same picks as the OP bar 1.

I recon Paulo will win his fight though, seems to be very underrated by some people despite probably being in the top10 welterweights in the world.

no i cant fault him for it, but it means i would never support him because his fighting tools are clearly inferior to his skilled opponents. He just abuses the judging criteria to grind out the win, rather than winning the fight...i.e judges score on 'octagon control' as opposed to docking points for stalling and mauling as randy does it.

its not randys fault per se, but he doesnt set the world alight with his fights, and indeed if you look back over his history his wins are littered with such tactics...

thats why id always want someone to bear randy, hell his record is tattered as anything anyway. he isnt the legend that a lot of ppl mark him down to be.

Same as you.

I just hope Couture doesn't bore us to death.

I predict the same as the OP and I'm also getting bored of Randy and this his fight will be pretty dull myself.

"his fighting tools are clearly inferior to his skilled opponents" how much **** do you want to talk? If they are superiour they would be able to beat his clinch game on the cage. In MMA you fight to win, yes some people are more boring than others, Randy doesn't have 1 punch KO power, he has always been a grinder, he uses dirty boxing, wrestling and ground and pound and wears opponents down.

Im not going to deny that he can be boring, but his fights with Sylvia, Gonzaga and Nog were far from boring.

another Couture fight ? ? ?...with so many more exciting fighters why do we repeatedly see this guy ?

i want to see Anderson Silva ...that guy is awesome.

I really like Belfort and believe he is capable of knocking Anderson out, but it was totally disrespectful for the UFC to give him that fight.

Nate should be having a rematch.

when im talking skill, im talking all round skill...

you cannot equate randys wins to skill per se, given that he has just dropped a weight he clearly cuts to make weight and beats his opponents through weight/strength pushing them into the cage. please explain what skill is involved here?

as you say he has very limited abilities, a bit of dirty boxing, take opponent down and rough em up for 5 rounds, win the fight...

thats not necessarily talent or skill, but a function of one skill (take opponent down) and a combination of weight, size, and unrelenting will to take opponent down and maul them on the canvas....

to see a skilled fighter, watch Shogun, Silva, machida, i.e they can fight on their feet, they can take their opponents down, have judo, or jitz, they can submit, etc and dont necessarily rely upon 1 thing repeated over and over again...

you take a look at randys wins and they came against smaller, or basically much worse opposition.

im not saying that randy is unskilled, he just doesnt exude the level and depth of skill you'd hope to see in a fighter that some consider a legend....

i just don't see that happening...i know you didnt say it would happen but still :p

Anderson Silva's last fight was one of the best i've ever seen....i don't rate Forrest Griffin that highly but he was humiliated...the last punch was more like a bitch slap...it didn't really have any power but he had just demoralized Griffin so badly he could have just stamped his feet and shouted and Griffin would have fell over.

*yes im exaggerating a little*

You do realise that most people who fight at 205 cut don't you? Randy was a small heavyweight everyone he fought at heavyweight was bigger than him.

Sure he used his massive size against Sylvia and Gonzaga didn't he... He even took the giant who is Brock Lesnar down, yes he used his weight for that one to.

I think you will also find Vera fought at HW and weighed about the same as Randy when doing so, he cuts to make 205.....

Randy can stand and box, he did so against Sylvia and Nog. He knew Vera had better striking than him and so negated it with clinch work, he wants to win so had a game plan.

You're arguement for people with mixed skills set is also not that great, couture can submit people he has good jits, he had a grappling match with Jacare which ended a draw, he is no slouch.

For the record Shogun has 18 wins - 15 kos 1 sub 2 decisions, so he clearly mainly just uses his striking, it's where he is strongest so he likes to keep it there. Im not doubting his ground game but he rarely uses it.

Machida - 16 wins 5 ko 2 sub 9 decisions again prefers standing.

Silva has 25 wins - 15 ko 4 sub 6 decisions, again more standing, it's where he is strongest.

So when Randy uses his strength and wins with it, he isn't skilled but these people who also mostly rely on 1 strength are ok to do that.

Can't wait to see what Maia does this event. Was sooo disappointed with how the Nate fight panned out. Hopefully he wont be opening with that high kick again

Agree with the op's picks too.

About Randy, yes he is boring at time to watch, but I hope I'm that damn fit at that age ;] Also 'training' with Gina would be a nice bonus!

of course i know that, his wins at heavy weight were against other usually 1 dimensional fighters...Silvia? dont make me laugh. when you start throwing around names like that, i know you are either BSing or dont really know decent fighters from great fighters...i.e whenever randy has fought a great fighter he has actually lost... unless he had a weight/size advantage.

what i am saying is that the rules in the UFC lend themselves towards wrestlers, of which randy fits in perfectly...but it also gives points for position / octagon control which are very subjective and dont necessarily mean that someone is winning the fight...byt winning the fight i mean putting their opponent away, or submitting them...

holding someone against the cage, because you know that if you let them off they will give you a beat down = lame...

yes all those guys like to stand and ko or tko their opponents, but if you think that shogun, or machida, or Silva have a worse ground game than Randy, you are delusional.

Mark Coleman vs. Randy Couture - no interest in 2 old timers trying to settle a grude - snooze fest - points win for Randy.

Nate Marquardt vs. Chael Sonnen - Nate by KO!!

Mike Swick vs. Paulo Thiago - Swick by 2nd rd KO

Demian Maia vs. Dan Miller - Miller points

Matt Serra vs. Frank Trigg - Trigg KO
