New S3 Sportback - Manual or S tronic?

The Piano black trim in my (admittedly now quite old) S3 is fantastic, I love it personally. It's the rest of the dash material that is the bane of my life. Things like the glovebox. Nightmare.

Nice choice nonetheless though!

New A3 is out this year I believe, it will be a while after for the S3 to arrive. The piano black looks fantastic but does scratch really easily even when using a soft cleaning cloth. Hope you have better luck with the S3 than I did with my A3, that was a piece of junk and Audis warranty is a joke.

Susuka Grey S3. Checked over an S5 in the same colour. Class. Looks amazing in the flesh.

Test drive went well.

The S3 Sportback was fitted with the 6-speed S Tronic box which, although not the fastest change in the world, was very smooth. Certainly good enough for a car of this class.

The big surprise was the car felt bigger and more planted handling-wise than I expected. Very stable and great road holding, helped no doubt by the Quattro 4WD system. The ride was firm but plush - well done Audi.

The interior is truly superb - probably best in class - and there was plenty of room for a giant like me. The Sportback body increases boot space substantially and permits the use of 4 doors making it more a small estate than a hatch.

Overall I was very impressed, so I've ordered one with the optional magnetic ride.

Anyone looking for a car of this type should take a good look at the S3 Sportback :)

What turned you off an S4? I love the S3, but find the S3 Sportback to combine the bad cosmetics of an estate without the truly masses of space you get with it.

Price I suspect, it's a fair bit more - I do agree they don't feel much different in terms of size though, I've looked at both recently but haven't organised any test drives yet (however I have booked one to try a Jag XF which I'm rather looking forward to...)

Sounds good, is this replacing the 1?
Yes. The 1 is a great car, but it has 2 problems.

The boot isn't big enough and although the seats fold down it's still a saloon so no decent height available.

We have 18" wheels with 35 profile tyres, combined with standard suspension. It's not a great combination making for a bouncy but uncomfortable ride. Should have stayed with the 17s.

Did you look at a 130i hatch, or is the S3 that much better?
4WD is pretty much a necessity for me, as are winter tyres, so the S3 is light years ahead of a 130i in terms of grip.

Were you wearing your bike helmet during the test Mark? :)

We're going for a test of the XC-90 R Design and Discovery 4 TDV6 next weekend. Don't think Mrs Mad Rapper will stand for any white knuckle shenanigans though :(
