My Audi for sale in the US - still broken suspension!

This was my Audi that I just found after a quick search on autotrader. If you look very closely at the photo of the Front drivers side (remember it's LHD, so front left) the wheel is set too far back in the arch, it should be central. Basically at least $2000 of suspension components need to be replaced. So I felt fairly happy selling it to carmax for $6000 thinking that any dealer would have to fix it before selling it for the market value....

But it looks like they have just washed it and stuck it out on the lot! Also 'almost brand new Dunlop tires'.... yeah, but they are winter tires, they will last about a month in a Charlotte summer when it's often 100 degrees F!!

Do those bumpers stick out more than in Europe or is it just me?

Yes US bumper regulations means they have to stick out further, so some manufacturers have different bumpers for the US market if they don't meet the regs. Have a look at a US spec mk1 Focus for example, yuk:

I was told its becuase insurance companies demand this in the US? They have a massive high number of little bumper prangs so fit special more stronger bumpers?
 
meh - i just thought it was becuase of the headlight washers! haha the last reported odometer reading gives you an idea how many miles i was covering in that thing! Here is a picture of me enjoying her to the full in October in Tennessee!

You might be right, although I thought it was for impact regulations. Surely if the insurance companies had that much say in the design of the car there would be a lot more changed than bumpers though.

Thought so! :D So insurance companies dont have to keep paying out for the massive amount of bumper prangs in the US.

Well we're both kind of right really - insurance is just one of the reasons that this originally became law (rather than being an insurance company requirement specifically).

In October 1972, the U.S. Congress enacted the Motor Vehicle Information and Cost Saving Act (MVICS), which required NHTSA to issue a bumper standard that yields the "maximum feasible reduction of cost to the public and to the consumer".[2] Factors considered included the costs and benefits of implementation, the standard's effect on insurance costs and legal fees, savings in consumer time and inconvenience, and health and safety considerations.

Yeah I watched some programme on TV about the traffic in NYC and other major citys years and years ago, and the cars just touch bumper to bumper all the time and they don’t care at all, crazy really.
