Old(ish) school hip-hop

People in this thread are saying things like "Wu Tang is real hip hop" and "this music is for real hip hop heads". This tells me they don't classify DJ Format as real hip hop. I want to know why.

You're reading too much into it, though you might be hitting at a truism. Any thread about hip-hop on a general music board usually slides into people reeling off classics from hip-hop's golden age, that's just how it is. It's often difficult getting people interested in music that doesn't fit that mold.

DJ Format I would say is Hip-Hop and pretty decent too as he works with some pretty good rappers/groups like abdominal, Jurassic5 and D-Sisive. Some might call it turntablism, as he's essentially a DJ/producer, like DJ Shadow and DJ Yoda.

De La Soul arguably, and IMO, made their best stuff after 3-feet high (although it's a brilliant classic album), Eminem is pop-rap for the masses and the Beastie Boys are like Hip-Hop marmite.

The stuff in the OP is, to Hip-Hop, like McFly are to indie music.

Without a doubt The Pharcyde :D

I saw them albeit 2 of the original group at the Jazz Cafe Camden. Absolutely awesome.

Also add
Jurassic 5
Beastie Boys

All the originals before this modern ganster rap rubbish that has no soul.

Always loved this track, even if the lyrics don't really make a lot of sense.

I would have to say this is one of the poorer Wu songs, they have made some classics but ones like this need a bit less weird lyrics and a bit more musical content. (my humble opinion of course)

Check out the first lot of solo albums.

Firstly, Wu Tang suck, secondly, 'Hip-hop fans' are a strange breed. Looking down their noses at others if they feel their tastes are less than their own.

This happens in this genre even more than in metal.

WoW Skee-Lo - I Wish. Loved that back in high school. Although I mostly listened to NWA back then and in particular Eazy-E.

That's because people post stuff like...

Wu Tang suck

If you don't understand how important a group like Wu Tang are to the genre then I'm not really sure that you should be commenting on the genre at all.

I wouldn't go starting a thread about metal bands and list Bryan Adams and Cliff Richard just because they play the guitar! :D
