A question.

I've done a search through a lot of the previous posts asking the same question, and most seem to point towards the Panasonic TX-42X10 & 42PX80 being the best bang for buck in this price range.

Is this still the case?

Pretty much, but the other one to look at is the LG 42PQ6000 (the 42X10's main plasma competitor apparently).

I have the 42PQ6000 and find it excellent for SD image quality and I love its colours also. It's commonly accepted that where it loses in black levels, image retention (some state this is a problem, others state that it's not) and outright quality of brand name (though most accept that this is now not so important), it catches up in connectivity (plays DivX over USB if this is important to you), sound quality, configurability (more control over image) and design (the single piece glass design looks more expensive than it is).

You have to decide where your priorities lie.

exactly the kind of info i was after, as the ability to play DivX via usb is massive. thanks

Are you going to be using SD more so than HD?

If your leaning towards using more HD content I'd get the G10 over the X10 personally.

I've just purchased it (literally, I've had it for around 2 days) and it's a superb set.

more SD to be honest, will eventually get sky HD or Freesat HD, but for the time being the only other HD will be from films

also, is there a TV around this price range that comes with ethernet, so that i'd be able to stream content from a networked pc?

Not sure if you can get for £500, but it is certainly a great TV, I love mine.

If you can get one for £500 then DO IT!

You can't, not new anyway. Hence his post is pointless. Why don't we all start recommending Kuros in a TV thread with a £500 budget? If we're going to totally ignore the OP's requirements, we might as well do it in style .

Not as far as I know and I doubt it. However the 2010 models might change that as manufacturers try and extend the life of old-ish panel technology by improving other areas. I believe that Sony's Bravia range has it, but they're LCDs and you'd do well to find a 40" new for £500.

thanks for your help, have just gone for a LG 42PQ6000 which is slightly under £500.

when buying a tv i always have to see it in the flesh, when i bought the one i have now i went into my local sony centre and picked the one that the colourful bunnies looked nicest jumping about on that was in my price range :)

It's an excellent TV, we're very pleased with ours. Here it is displaying SD BBC One next to our old 28" Bush (snigger) CRT:

Just bought the in laws a panny 42X10 for £479 - cracking deal, great TV and looks nice in the flesh. they are mainly viewing SD sky material and they are well chuffed with it.

Weird! I initially tried a different SCART cable; same problem. I then tried both SCART cables on AV2 and it's working fine as you can see. Obviously settings are not the problem since AV2 works ok, but in any case I checked all menu settings and found no problems.

We've only had this TV for a short time and we bought it from John Lewis, so it's not really a problem in terms of warranty. They're calling us back today to arrange a course of action.

and mine just got delivered yesterday

Soz to hear your having problems, hopefully it'll be resolved soon.

I'm impressed with the tv though, sd is pretty amazing, the usb feature is very useful, and even the sound quality (which i've seen knocked by others) is impressive.
