I'm talking about 720p mkv files, will I be able to play them on this spec(it's a laptop):

-Core2Duo T5270 1.40GHz
-2GB ram
-Intel GMA 965(x3100) onboard gfx

Does anyone have any optimization tips? I wasn't quite sure where to post this.

Thanks

720p actually means 1280x720 screen resolution.
if you have a look in display properties -> settings you'll see if your onbaord graphics can handle it.
From what i've read on the intel web site they can handle:
640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, and 1600x1200
if the screen can handle 1280x1024 then yes, you'll just have a smaller view size

Handling 1280x1024 and playing 720p movies are not the same.

My best guess is you won't be able to play them, But im sure you'll be able to download a sample clip from somewhere to test it out.

really? if a graphics card can run resolutions higher than required (providing CPU etc are up to it) i thought they could?
Showing some display resolution is entirely different thing from decoding compressed video or calculating game's graphics.

In case CPU and other components are up to it, then you'll be able to play 720p video. UnworthyBean meant that your video card can handle displaying resolution 1280x1024 but to play 720p video might no be capable of. Authors video card might be too slow to handle that kind of video. But he needs to download 720p sample file to try it out.

My computer handles them fine, So i would expect yours to.

My spec

Opteron 146 Single core @ 2.6ghz
2GB RAM
X800 graphics card

Thing about my spec is my graphic card doesnt do any decoding its all handled by the CPU, And I'm pretty sure your CPU is better than mine.

However I am only guessing :)

Just make sure you get yourself a good program, Like FFdshow. Avoid codec packs

I think it could play them but to be honest with you I wouldn't want to watch it. The decoding work it will have to do will likely be too much for it and it will stutter at times, I would suggest looking for a cheap GPU to stick in there :)
