A Mercedes CL63... from 2001?!

They are exceptionally rare, it was a very special model and is based on the CL600. It has a V12 which is bored out rather than the 6.2 litre V8 in the current '63' badged AMG's.

Wierd. Had literally no idea these ever existed. Any idea why they produced so few?

remember its just a special edition of the C600 V12

the 63 moniker goes back in Mercedes History

Hence why the modern V8 cars are called the C63 AMG even though its actually a 6.2 litre engine.

No its not - its not a C600 for a start, they dont do a C Class with the V12 - and it is a genuine 6.3 litre engined car - the 6.0 V12 was rebored to 6.3 litres for the CL63.

It's not a CL600 with some posh trim and a Special Edition badge.

Sold When New For £144,000

Now £26,995

Why the massive depreciation if its so rare? In don’t quite get that at all, yeah its 9 years old but even so its a huge amount, you would think only 26 were made they would acclaim a higher price tag this this.

It doesnt really matter how rare it is, it's still an 8 year old CL (It's a late 2001, we are early 2010). The fact its worth twice what a 2001 CL600 is pretty staggering in itself?

That's what I thought. You could get a newer CL65 for the same price and it would be facelifted and have better performance. I guess the CL63 is for someone to stick in a private collection and hope it appreciates over the next 25 years.

These things were scary in terms of running costs. My mate had an SL65 from new, his running costs are on Pistonheads but in simple terms:

Bought for £149,987 in October 2004 at 0 miles. Sold for £55,000 at 57,000 miles around 3 years later.

Pretty sure there are a couple of S63's as well.

Yep, there are S63 W220's, produced for one year only at the turn of the facelift, and are very very rare. There was also a runout model badged as an S65, which ran the same 612PS 6L V12 TT as the SL65 AMG used. (The S600TT was a 5.5, 500PS).

the C600 was a typo. meant to say CL600

and my point about the naming was that the 63 monkier goes back in mercedes history, such that even the modern AMGs, with 6.2 Engines, are called CL63 (as an example) even though they only have 6.2 engine.

rebored or not (i never said it wasnt) my point was that it was a special edition CL600. It wouldnt be special if they made a lot of them. Bit like the CLK63 DTM

This one is a CL63 because it actually does HAVE a 6.3 litre engine, not simply as a harp back to the days of old as per the current 63 series AMG models. It is no more simply a special edition CL600 than an CL55 AMG is a special edition CL500.
