GTX 280 SLi Versus HD 5870

Let's see your crysis bench then, my 260's own blah blah..:p oh he beat me by a few FPS, got four GPU's has he ROFL. Guys calm down, yeah I would be envious if I didn't have a 5870 to.

So what, it's not that much bigger, missing the point here, single 5870 thrashes 3x280's in crysis, now that's what you call progress. Anyway proved my point, I'm a gonna...

Ravenxxx is clearly trolling, so maybe ignore him?

Personally, unless you can find a 280 for less than £120, I wouldn't bother going for SLi, a single 280 should easily last you untill Fermi comes out, if nvidia is what you prefer.

Selling your 280 for decent price and getting a 5870 is also a good option as it will give you approximately 40% to 70% extra performance (and possibly more in the future).

Also, you can create profiles in Catalyst Control Centre, but it's not well implemented as in the nvidia drivers, less automated as I recall.

Hes running tri-SLI - my pair of 260 cost prolly £100 less than your 5870 and are only a few fps behind on that benchmark and probably a few fps faster in most games. envious? naaaah :D if I was really envious I'd just buy a couple of 5970 anyhow.

What point? It doesn't trash anything... its a single next gen card it would be gash if it didn't put up a good fight against multiple previous gen... kinda dissapointing really tho that it barely struggles to match them let alone conclusively beat them.

What hes missing is the fact that those benchmarks hes comparing too are not only running old drivers... but sloow shader clocks too - even stock 285 SLI would beat his OC'd 5870 by around 15% let alone OC'd 285 SLI.

Nah, it's just the butthurt NV fanboys. ;)

Put up or shut up..;) more meaningless words with nothing to back em up.

Seeing as Roff can't put up, I'll put up for him, 260/216 SC in SLI...average 44 FPS..

8xAA, very surprised by the minimal loss in FPS with 8xAA.:D

I don't have crysis no more I would compare a 1680 bench, these test's was done a while ago.

I only run the sli setup to game at 30" screen res.

Whats with all the dodgy comparisons? A 5870 vs 280 SLI on old drivers and then a tri sli setup prob costing £600+ against the same 5870

The 280s in sli would be faster than the 5870 though it relies on multi gpu support.

There is nothing dodgy in comparisons. What is dodgy is a user with an ATi card coming in and 'larging it'. What makes things worse is that this will keep on fuelling the ATI/Nvidia debate.

If the results were presented in a much less obnoxious way there wouldn't be an issue and all it does is getting Nvidia users/ fanboys/call it what you will backs up and it ends up in a slanging match with no real discussion at hand, nothing learned.

As a former 5870 and current ATI user it makes me sad that a user with such a nice card and great performing cards post in style which I certainly would not do. And I wouldn't like it if a NVdia user did it either.

The Gfx card forums use to be such a great place for learning stuff and from time to time it does exhibit this. But this thread does nothing to restore the reputation of the days of old and unfortunately for the OP more than likely confusing.

54FPS is definitely impressive for Crysis with 8AA.

It's obviously favourable to GTX280 SLi, 1 GPU versus three and all that stuff.

No point in arguing over it really though. We all expect newer tech to do much better than old gen stuff.

To be honest as well, the third GTX2850is probably not really doing too much for the FPS, most tri-SLi benchmarks I've seen show a very slight increase in FPS, not many situations really let 3GPUs perform optimally.

I think VRAM becomes a limiting factor first which would "gimp" all results anyway.

A 5870 only really "owns" GTX280 tri SLi if you were considering which one to buy in which case the 5870 comparatively "owns" the tri SLi 285s in price to performance.

However, it doesn't really matter, I don't think anyone would currently buy 3 GTX280s over a 5870 or even 5870 crossfire as it'd cost the same.

Also, I think the biggest point in the results is the 8AA used, highly preferable over 0AA of the GTX280s.

However, as I said, it doesn't really matter.

If you're gonna upgrade to anything to do with a 58XX, from 280 SLi, I'd say go 5850 crossfire.

This is the reason i gave up asking for advice on a new card, there are so many ATI fanboys bigging up their cards unless you get a 58XX card they'll say you bough wrong.

Ive just bought a 2nd hand GTX280 mainly for watercooling reasons and its a little upgrade on the GTX260.
I went Nvidia purely on the issues with ATI drivers, and the cost of the latest gen cards is silly, you'll notice the difference on benchmarks only.

Ive got a 22'' monitor and the GTX280 plays MW2 easily with everything on the highest setting at 1680x1050 res, for most people that is all they want.

Crysis is a funny game to bench cards on, my GTX260 played it with everything on high, 2XAA at 1680x1050, ive not tried it with the GTX280 yet but if it does the same then whats wrong with it?

The new cards seem to be well ahead of most games on the market now, last gen cards are cheaper and do the job well enough for me.

i thought it was common knowledge that the 5870 is the same as a 295 more or less which is basically two 275's in SLI? am i wrong here to think that two 280's will be quicker lol??
