at the moment i'm planning a route to take when i go travelling next year. i'm thinking of going to south-east Asia, hitting all the major places on the way. (Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines) then eventually ending up in Australia where i'm hoping to get a working tourist visa so spend the best part of a year there.

as this is my first time travelling, i'm wondering if there are any fellow travellers out there who have any tips, places to see, recommendations, etc....
:D

I really don't understand the attraction of Australia. Other than nice weather, a bridge that you can see in newcastle, a white building that isn't as nice as the armadillo in Glasgow and a big rock - what else is there?

Fantastic scenery, a feeling of huge vastness, amazing animals, brilliant people, stunning cities, brilliant mountains, great coastal areas, several world heritage sites...

... it's just totally awesome.

My friend did this, he got a round the world ticket, went straight to Australia, but ended spending all his money having a good time. So he had to start working in order to save up some money, except hes such a prat he just kept spending it, so after a year, he managed to go to Australia, Hawaii (for a few hours stopover), LA (stopover) and back to England. Dont make the same mistake as him!

Pretty much agree with the above , however if you have the money. you'll arguably see more stunning sites , awesome people truly mind boggling things for a fraction of the price in SE Asia and in some cases support newly starting tourist industries.

However like Fox says Australia is awesome country spent the last year here and am just about to embark on Se Asia.

Have you thought about going to Australia first then Se Asia then you have a aim to save money for Se Asia

Best place for advice is lonely plants forums. A true goldmine of information.

hope all that helps

Have a look at Trip Advisor and Hostel World. Great sites. Wash your own clothes in the sink, do a few items a day - don't let it pile up. Eat when and where the locals do. Don't try to cram too much in. Some people plan trips where they intend to visit 6 or 7 cities in 10 days. Do that and you'll spend most of your trip travelling, you'll only get to see a tiny snapshot of each destination. It's pointless.

The only Brits to knock Australia are the ones who have never been.

It is clean, empty and with top scenery. Also the main language in the cities is English, unlike Birmingham, Leicester and Bradford.

Aside from stuff bites you and kills you, Australia is better than Britain in every way I can see.

I have to admit, I've not felt the great attraction of Australia myself and yes I havent been yet either.

Judging from some above posts and another thread in these forums regarding Australia. I think the reason why most Brits love Australia is:

1. They speak English. (well they were english :D)
2. Similar attitude/humour etc etc to us (English)
3. They're openly racist.

Had a gf who isn't British went to oz, told me she said it just felt like the UK bar the weather of course.

I'm not saying it's not worth going, but I don't get why it gets so much more attention than anywhere else in the world due to maybe the above points. Its what some people want the UK to be?

For general travel information I like http://www.travelblog.org/

Thailand - You have to visit Koh Tao

Malaysia - You need to go to the Petronas Towers just as it's getting dark.

I am doing the Philippines this year and maybe Indonesia......check out Palawan and the Gili islands.

Yep Australia feels like America while i thought New Zealand feels like the UK

Edit - I went to all the places on your list bar the Philippines.

Cambodia - Ankor Wot is a must

Malaysia - Stay in 5* hotel in kuala lumpa as apparently cheapest place in the world. I got the Best suit in a 5* hotel for £65 , Pop to Singapore for a few days , visit the Perhentian Islands and avoid port dixon at all costs!

Thailand - Kao tao for diving , koh pang yang for partying , phuket for endless bars and prostitutes and chaing mai for activities

Australia - I did Oz Experience and it was great. Make sure you do white water rafting in the tully river! go to fraiser island , go to sydney opera house to watch a show .
