I have an offer of a cheap 5870 from a friend so I was thinking of pairing it up with my 5970, is this possible and what are the performance benefits? (if any).

Looking at the ATi combinations chart, it is one of the recommended xfire combinations. Overclock that 5970 to 5870 speeds and you'll have 5870 triplefire ;)

ive been told its not possable to CF a 5850 with a 5870, so i dont think youl CF a 59 and a 58??

Of course you can run a 5870 with a 5970. They are in effect the same cards, it's just that the 5970 is 2 downclocked versions of the 5870.

I wish I was as rich as my friend as he is always buying new stuff, he's just bought 2 5970's the lucky b'stard.

What happens if I don't clock my 5970 to 5870 speeds will the 5870 downclock?

Wish I had a friend like that, in fact, I wish I had friends!!

Lol - I'll be your friend :P

++ The HX850W I know will do a HD5970 fine, but I'm not sure about them both, I think it should power them :)

If not, you can always sen your HD5870 to a good home here :P

My 5970+5870 @ 900/1300 rig pulls up to 850 watts at the wall (approx 710w load on psu worst case scenario for me assuming 80% efficiency) with an i7 @ 4.0GHz + a load of other stuff in there ....

That is with Prime 95 AND Furmark on the go at the same time .... normal gaming sees approx 200w less that that at the wall ...

Oh, the clocks are not set to match each other by the drivers if they start out different so no downclocking .. another myth busted :D

Have you got this set up ninja?

Shall I go for it or not? How much performance gain will it get?

It's thought of as overkill until you play Crysis, so just to give you an idea check out the AA settings on this :) Vsync it for 60fps ... nice.

Stalker Clearsky with literally everything maxed out including sunshafts is smooth and cool at times ... it was not quite there with the 5970 on its own.

Apart from those 2 and maybe 140fps in Dirt 2 DX11 maxxed out I can see no benefit whatsoever but yeah, if you fancy it then go for it!

Nice!

I think I will get it then, thanks mate :)

You'll enjoy it ... and if cheap enough you can always sell a bit later without penalty if the 5870 don't suit. If you go to town in the AI settings then you can still bring this setup to its knees :D

This stuff is meant to be played with so play a few games between benching sesisons lol and post results.

Ninja would it be possible for you to show me a picture of your rig to see how the 2 GFX cards look together please?
