What is your job?

Current Job: I work as a Software Support Consultant
Salary: 25-30K
Working Towards: Promotion to Technical Support – more money, company car/laptop/phone, and I’ve basically been doing the role it entails for years anyway; will be nice to finally be noticed for it!

I’ve been in a comfortable rut with this job, it doesn’t really tax my abilities, but I’m not looking elsewhere either, I like the people I work with mainly, so we’ll see where I go over the coming years (promotion should be this month!)

I think it boils down to wanting an easy life. Producing high-end research is difficult, and it's much easier to move to a mediocre university where all you need do is spend a few hours a week lecturing, with some administration things on the side and take almost all the pressures off the research side of things. It's possible I feel like this at the moment because I feel like I've had to jump lots of hurdles and don't want to jump anymore. Perhaps in ten years time my top end priority will be to produce high-end research - it's difficult to tell.

The lengths of the fellowships I've referred to are 1-2yrs and 3-5yrs, but this route is by no means typical. Usual root would be:

PhD -> Postdoc1 -> ... -> PostdocN -> Departmental position or different career,

where N can be anything from 1 to 5, each lasting 1-3yrs.

If you're half decent, PhD -> 1xPost Doc -> Lecturer is pretty straight forward (even at top universities). Depending on the field doing
PhD -> 1xPost Doc -> Researcher -> Senior Researcher -> Professor is also possible.

Current Job: FY2 Junior Doctor
Salary: ~30K
Working Towards: Just got a 2yr training job for Acute Care: Emergency Medicine core training, and aiming to complete dual specialty training in Emergency and Intensive Care Medicine

Current Job- Cold Store Supervisor.
Salary- £28500.
Working Towards- Treading water for the next couple of months pending on developments in the states.

I've got to say, that's an interesting route for wanting an easy life!
After my BSc an easy life for me was getting as far away from academia as possible.

Fascinating range of salaries here, a fair few big earners too. How about some hand outs ;)

Current Employment: None, I'm a poor poor student!

Connexions Personal Adviser (Careers Guidance)

I hope you're better than one that rang me last year, it went something like this -

Hi, I'm .......... from Connexions in ............
How can I help you?
I have 2 clients with me and I'm helping them to look for jobs at the NHS
Well this is not really my job but but have you been on the NHS Jobs website?
Where is it?
Have you typed NHS Jobs into Google?
How do I get that?
Run your web browser and type in www.google.co.uk and then search for NHS Jobs (a lifetime went by with him mumbling on the other end) ...
Tell you what type this into the bar across the top www.jobs.nhs.uk (another lifetime passes by and he eventually arrives at the page)
What do I do now?
Search for a job
Where?
Over on the right side where it says Quick Search or click on the Advanced Search link

and so it went on to the amazement of the rest of the staff in the office but when they realised it was a Connexions Adviser they were gobsmacked.

Job: Network Technician at a High School & 2 Primary Schools
Salary: 18-20k/year
Working Towards: Further networking qualifications to hopefully lead to a more senior role :)

I can't comment too much on Connexions but I did use them a little bit after I left school and they were quite helpful.

The Jobcentre on the other hand were a total pain in the ass and I've NEVER EVER come across advisors that are so rude. I really don't know how they get away with it.

I had one advisor who told me I wasn't doing enough to look for work and that I wasn't even bothered about looking for work, regardless of EVERY e-mail I had that proved how many CV's I sent and where I sent them to. (A total of 60.) I had another advisor who told me I should lie about my work and qualifications on my CV... What a joke.

I really felt like making a complaint, but I figured it just would be a waste of my time.

I truly feel sorry for anyone that has to deal with the people at the JobCentre, they are truly terrible.

Luckily I don't have to deal with them anymore as I landed a job in sales being fully trained in Lighting Installtion also.... I love it, I work with fantastic people and I have a great boss. :)

In 2007 I was in the Longton one and this 'Adviser' was being so rude that I stood up in front of everybody and ranted how I had been employed since 1974 and it wasn't my fault I was on the dole. I told her that I had applied for many jobs and there was no need to treat me like crap and be rude to me because I was already at an all time low. I also added that I wasn't like the people outside at 10am in the morning drinking from Carling cans
I got a standing ovation.

What about PhD -> Lecturer, I guess it depends on the amount experience you get whilst doing the PhD. Would think I would rather lecturer and do research than the grind of a PhD for years after. I guess it depends onthe person tho.
