now i need a new board so i can go crossfire, but i was thinking would it be best just to move over to the new Intel P55 boards now or will i not see any difference in performace from the e8500 to the i3 cheers

Rather than xfire, would a 5850 not perform the same as 2x5770's ???

The HD5770 Crossfire setup would be comparable to an HD5870 under ideal conditions.

However, buying an HD5870 would be cheaper than buying a new motherboard,RAM and processor and another HD5770 1GB graphics cards.

Even then an HD5850 1GB can be overclocked to around the same performance level as an HD5870 1GB!!

Yeah on the surface I would have thought a Radeon™ HD 5850 would be the way to go . . . although I must say Crossfire does hold a certain appeal! :D

There is always the question of 5850 availability though . . . . hmmm I'd be number crunching here myself to look at what my funds ££££ were bringing to the table and what my actual motivations were? . . . i.e retail therapy or pure FPS improvement or new toys to play with etc . . .

When are the new Radeons™ released? . . . soon I think no?

March I think

The chip you have at 3.8ghz is fine for games though.

I think a single card and keep the chip and mobo you have is the way to go.

single card and keep your mobo unless you can source a cheap X48/P45 board.

I'm going the 5770 cf route...will probably be buying one of the XFX 5770 XXX editions next week to get me started.

Hopefully the HD5830 will be released in the next few weeks too. I wonder if overclocked it could be as good as an HD5850 1GB??

forgot to mention i already have another 5770 card in my htpc but all i use it for is films so going to go crossfire,if i could pickup a cheap p45 or x38/48 would that be just as good as going for the i3 then, and thanks for the advice

The sub £100 P55 motherboards only do asymmetrical Crossfire at PCI-E 2.0 16X/4X!

You are looking at £120+ for a P55 motherboard which can do symmetrical PCI-E 2.0 8X/8X Crossfire. Of course add the cost of the RAM and the CPU itself and the upgrade is not that cheap.

OTH,you can get an X48 based motherboard for £100 which does Crossfire at PCI-E 2.0 16X/16X:

p5q deluxe for £90.00 is pretty good, best motherboard i ever owned. Really regret not holding onto it now.

+1, fantastic boards for clocking on. Prior to the p5q deluxe i ran an evga 680ia1, couldnt clock my q6600 over 3.0ghz for love nor money, 3.8ghz with relative ease with that cpu on the p5q, also had an easy 3.8ghz from an EO stepping q9550, 1.216 vcore, would have gone over 4ghz on lowish volts with a bit of tweaking. I got the upgrade bug and sold them on to fund my i7 purchase.
