Phenom II X4 960T is the name

Delta Leonis is a star in the constellation of Leo and natives calls it Zosma. Some even calls it Zozma or Duhr. This science class is less important than the fact that AMD’s next generation 45nm quad core is codenamed Zosma.

You can expect it as early as Q2 2010, probably the middle part of it, and it is set to launch together with three new Hexa cores. We have a strong reason to suspect that Phenom II X4 960T 95W TDP quad-core is a six-core with two cores disabled, but we cannot confirm this at press time.

We don’t know any clock speeds but we can tell you that it supports DDR3 1333 is 45nm SOI (what else) and that it fits in AM3 motherboards. We still wonder what T stands for but we are quite sure it's not Terrestrial. Thuban perhaps?

Looks really good was going to get the hex-core. Might wait for this one, if you can unlock the two other cores:p

Hexacore = yes please!
Name = were you drunk when you picked that...?

Who wants to take bets that core unlocking is AMD's new marketing strategy? Not that it's a bad thing, and it certainly doesn't hurt when enthusiasts sing their chip's praises. After all, it's people who frequent these kind of forums who are most likely to succeed and make best use of the chips and pass the word about.

Sprinkle a few borderline batches with locked cores and let word of mouth promote the line 10 times better than advertising ever could.

Genius move (if true). Now, about that name...

I like the name, As for price if it's around the same price as a 955/965 and a chance to unlock 2 more cores. I'd buy one even if they only overclock to 3.8/4.0.

Cheers again mathwat, your turning into proper newshound! :)

drunkenmaster mentioned these chips a few weeks ago but I got the impression there were not going to appear until the end of the year?

Old Fud boy is claiming Q2 2010? . . . interesting!

Some interesting news, I was going to be buying a AMD quad core soon to upgrade my cpu, but hearing this I think I'll wait to see what happens.

Cheers for the news Mathwat!

I will only considor any of these processors if I can get a 6 core running stable at 4ghz, if they do though I'l pretty certain I'll go for one.

Only getting the new quad if it does unlock to 6 and my motherboard can do it though. :P

Considering that the Thuban is made on a 45NM process I doubt it would reach 4GHZ. If it does then that would be impressive for a 6 core processor processor made on a 45NM process.

Well we'll see, I have a very meaty processor right now, I'll probably wait for the 32nm systems to come out.

Ideally I'd like to wait until there is a new socket standard and DDR4.

6 cores on 45nm might be an uphill battle with clocking and temps. I'm interested in sexcoar for my next proper rig though, will be watching.

6 cores has 1.5x the die area of a quad core, meaning 1.5x the heat transfer surface area to the heatsink, its NOT 1.5x the power and heat on the same die size.

Its why people all assumed quad cores would overclock very badly and significantly worse than a dual core, they don't, and they didn't. LIkewise these new 6core chips are 140W TDP, the exact same TDP that the last several quad cores launched at.

Realistically, with any "normal" oversized heatsink, pretty much any half decent after market cooler, shouldn't have any trouble hitting similar clock speeds to the quad core's.

Wayne, next year for the new architecture chips, Q2(maybe slightly earlier) for the basic 6 core version of a current Phenom, problem is they just aren't very exciting unless you encode/edit video all day long for work. In terms of real moving forwards of architecture, higher IPC, potentially better overclocking, new manufacturing process, new chipsets and a bunch of new features, and a significant performance boost, we're still looking at next year.

Will there be any 32NM offerings for AM3?

I'm not sure I'll considor an upgrade over the 965BE, I think I'd like to wait until a new standards set is out. (New CPU socket, DDR4, USB3 SATA6 etc).

Well GF will probably have 32nm ready some time before Bulldozer appears. In theory AMD could release a 32nm version of Phenom II that would help them reduce temps and power consumption along with adding a few hundred MHz. This will allow them to better compete with Intel products until Bulldozer appears.

If it is economically wise for AMD to do so though, is unknown.

Apparently they will have turbo boost, i think that will be interesting.

If these will cost about the same as the 965/i5 750 and can unlock to 6 cores then I'll be very impressed! Will be some proper competition for the i7 hopefully. 6 cores stable at 4ghz would be absolutely amazing for i5 750/AMD 965 prices. And remember, the more cores you have the bigger your e-peen! :D
