Penny Pinching Rumours. ( Afghanistan )

right, so you'd be content drinking 2 litres of foul-tasting chemical filled water, which possibly has unexpected health risks, every day?

Chemical purifying tabs are for emergencies, not frequent use

I'm just saying in a warzone your not going to get everything you might want, what's next complaining about not having toilet paper, lipstick?

Whilst it might not be ideal to live on iodine or whatever tabs, if it says us money and doesn't kill them then fine.

What a *****.

Good god, if this is true then it makes be sick when they could be cutting spending elsewhere. Like housing/living allowance for immigrants for example.

Getting the bare minimum required to do the job isn't how we should treat those risking their lives. Just so you know.

Was chatting to my buddy (merlin pilot) about how they keep cool in the cab (for those who don't know, the merlin cockpit is basically a giant greenhouse - great for visibility, not so great for keeping cool.). He said they keep a crate of bottled water between them to keep hydrated when flying, so I would hope if this story is true they wouldn't have to give theirs up.

Looking around I found something interesting. Nothing to do with penny pinching or rumours, just water :

Troops test clean drinking water systems in Afghanistan

Two innovative drinking systems to decontaminate water in the most remote areas of the world are being trialled by British troops in Afghanistan for use on operations.

With Service personnel deploying to many hot climates, it is vital that they have access to clean and hygienic emergency drinking water in locations where there may not be any source available locally.

The Pure Hydration Expedition Field Pump System, produced by BW Technologies, allows the individual to draw water from a contaminated source, purify it by removing bacteria, waterborne pathogens, sediment and heavy metals, and pump it back, decontaminated, into the service issue Camelback.

The Lifesaver Bottle, produced by Lifesaver Systems, is pumped manually to filter dirty water through a membrane. The muddy water is then instantly decontaminated to remove bacteria, viruses, fungi and waterborne pathogens.

Over 4,000 filters are being trialled with members of 19 Mechanised Brigade currently serving in Afghanistan.

Thats disgusting, the stuff they put into the tablets to purify the water probably does more harm than good anyway.

This is what i was thinking they'd use, I'm pretty sure membrane technologies have reach the point were they near reverse osmosis for purity (for human consumption purposes anyway)

You utter prat.

As for the link above for water purification systems, this is probably how the rumour got started (as they all do) with a little truth and then adding emotion.

I have a good friend of mine going away to marine training in two weeks, all I will say is I hope you are wrong and I say the same to him when I see him and another friend from school in the marines.

"I never want to know what you do, but I respect, admire and understand what you do" I hope everyone else feels the same way I do about the armed forces

It's aload of bull! There is bottled water everywhere! We get water purification tablets for a 'just in case' scenario
