So with this new charge system they have I was charged £21 for being in my authorised overdraft, this then took me into unauthorised as I was £90 into my £100 overdraft.

I have just received a letter from them telling me that so far I have racked up a further £35 charge.

How the hell can they say that this system is fairer than their previous system/

I suspect a simple phone call explaining the situation would sort it out, because surely they can't charge you for being in authorised overdraft? ;)

its a government bank what do you expect.

So, you were overdrawn for 21 days (£1 per day standard authorised overdraft charge), and then for a further 7 days (at £5 a day).

The rules were to cater for people who misjudge a small amount for a small period of time. Not for people who spend nearly a whole month overdrawn.

As far as I was aware they only grant you an authorised overdraft on a reward account, which is £300.

I think they charge me £12 a month for my ultimate reward account, despite not using any of its benefits.

But yes, it's a completely useless system and I sure as hell hope they lost a lot of business over it.

I got charged £25. Cant remember seeing any advance warning. I'm binning them and have opened an account with Alliance & Leicester. £100 reward and an extra £45 for going through Quidco.

Well, after reading the links I can safely say that I won't ever be banking with Halifax. It's absolutely ridiculous and quite simply opportunistic bullying.

Halifax are without a shadow of a doubt, the biggest bunch of "$(!"*£&%ers ever found anywhere in banking.

Their policy on bank charges has been ridiculous for years. I got charged £35 for being overdrawn by 35pence for 1 day.

And guess what, ive got internet paperless billing, so what was the charge for ? sending me an e-mail which is free. What possible cost can they put on the inconvenience of being without 35p for a day ? £3 £4 £5 at most ?

That and their constant harassment if you missed payments. They rang 3 times a day every day untill you throw yourself off a bridge or pay up. They didnt care which.

Then they decided it was a good idea to charge you £30 a month just for the priviledge of having an overdraft.

I'm well rid and now with Alliance and Leicester (now santander)

I’m with the Halifax and have been since I started my working life back in ’97, never thought to change to another bank/building society, but I’m not too impressed with their new charge system, and although I haven’t used my authorised overdraft for years, I don’t like the idea of getting such hefty charges now.

I may look at opening an account with Santander, quick question though – my direct debits that are set to go from my current account, will Santander be able to have those adjusted, or will I need to contact the appropriate companies I’m paying (like I said I’ve never looked!)?

Thanks.

santander moved the lot for us when we moved from halifax

They can even change your salary over, but advise its usually easier for you to do it as you can go direct to your payroll office and not have to go through switchboard etc..

But all my direct debits were moved for me, only one of them got missed which was our fault as they sent us a letter asking us to confirm it was all correct. Now very happy with alliance & leicester / santander.

No way in hell, every other bank offers a totally free, interest free overdraft.

They would have 0 customers if it applied to student accounts too.
