Hey guys. I drive a X reg Fiesta mk5. It failed its most recent MOT for the following reasons:

Reason(s) for refusal to issue Certificate
Front Brake disc(s) excessively worn (3.5.1h)
Front Brake disc(s) excessively scored (3.5.1h)
Front Brake disc(s) excessively pitted (3.5.1h)
Offside Rear Tyre has a lump, caused by separation or partial failure of its structure (4.1.C.1b) **DANGEROUS**
Nearside Rear Tyre has a tear, caused by separation or partial failure of its structure (4.1.C.1b) **DANGEROUS**

Advisory Notice issued
Rear Service brake Your vehicle has only just met the required service brake efficiency. It would appear that the braking system requires adjustment or repair. (3.7.A.8)

So by the advice given at KWIK FIT I need new break pads on the front, and two new rear tyres right? Just making sure they're fobbing me off.

Also can someone please explain the advisory to me as they didn't, could this develop into a major issue if it is not addressed? What is my rear service break anyway?

Thanks guys

From that list you need new disks and pads at the front and two rear tyres. The "Rear Service brake" is your handbrake. It could develop into a major issue but it may not.

so you driving a car with defective front brakes and two illegal tyres.

Your rear brakes meet the legal requirement, but only just.

"Develop into a major issue" not going to sugar coat it, it already is. Its a wonder you've not been banned or killed. That thing is a death trap.

Defective tyres is 3 points, PER TYRE. so thats 6 points and £120 fine sitting right there if you dont get 2 new tyres. You'll also need new discs AND new pads on the front. And you'll need your rear brakes looking at as well.

Not sure why Kwik fit are telling you that you only need new pads. you blatently need tyres and discs as well, as no ammount of new pads will sort excessively worn discs.

Yes by develop into a major issue I meant is it worth getting fixed/replaced now. I know it isn't going to sugar coat it, that's why I didn't try to.

What sort of work is required to replace/fix the handbreak?

Defective brakes and illegal tyres and you'd consider not sorting them now?

Assuming the fiesta has rear drum brakes, it might need new shoes or just an adjustment of the mechanism

I never suggested not sorting them now? Where have you got this impression from?

handbrake should just a question of booking it into a garage to adjust it

£50 or thereabouts, not a massive job.

your post implied you were questionning that if you didnt do them, would it be an issue. Understand now thats not what you meant, but its how you came across :)

Ahh I was questionning the need to change the handbreak, not the tyres/front discs. £50 sounds reasonable enough to warrant getting replaced. Thank you.

If I were you I'd visually check the brakes yourself, as they could be talking rubbish as discs and pads are easy work for them.

They won't be, the ministry has altered Kwikfit's MOT licence, any one garage misbehaving would loose their MOT licence nationally. Same with National Tyres.

Kwik-fit MOTers now have the compulsory 2 days training annually plus 2 weeks from the company to learn how to MOT a car.

you cant replace a handbrake.

You can replace the rear brake shoes, but these have such a ridiculously long life id be surprised if they need replacing.

The handbrake cable just pulls these shoes, so it will most likely be just that this cable needs tightenning
