Should the 5870 be discontinued?

Serious discussion time.
Having read through more and more reviews on the 5870/5850.

It's become stupidly evident that a 5870 at 5850 speeds or vice versa, performs the same.

Conclusion, the 5870 is a card bottlenecked from the get go.

Should this card be discontinued? It has a hefty price, upto 100+ more than a 5850, yet actually performs no better at the same clocks.

The same goes with the 5970, here's a review, it's running at 5850 clocks as standard, look how it performs in relation to a 5850 crossfire.

It makes for an interesting talking point but when you realistically look at any graphics card, apart from the best one out, all other cards could be worse.

Take your point about a 5850 performing the same, when overclocked, as a 5870; this is true. But is it also not true that a 4870, when overclocked, is on par with a 4890? The fact is you have to overclock the card to get that added performance, back to the 5850 example, it isn't up to the 5870 performance from the word go, you have to tweak it. You can tweak it to match the 5870, but that is a stock 5870 against a non-stock 5850. Clock the 5870 up a bit and it will outperform the 5850 - there isn't really any point to any of this.

The same happens in nearly every product range that is available in any retail sector, there is one product that, off the shelf, is better than another and is thus priced higher.

With regards to the benchmark link, I didn't check every page but from what I saw there was no 5970 mentioned at all?

No, you're not getting the point lol.
I mean at the same clocks, the perform the same.
A 5850 runs slower clocks than a 5870, but will overclock the same amount.

This is evident with the 5970, which at stock runs 5850 clocks, and it's consistently beaten by the 5850 crossfire.
A 5850 at 850/1200, will perform the same as a 5870 at 850/1200, that shows the 5870 is bottlenecked.

And I used the wrong benchie.

i'm thinking of ditchin the 5770 and getting a 58 series card and i think a 5870 would be fine for a while to come i agree with the above post that once you overclock the 5870 then it will surpass the 5850's overclock .

within a year or so we'll start to really see the power of these new DX 11 gpu's with better drivers and faster processors it's just a matter of buying at the right time

i would like a 5870 vapor x but i don't like the price lol

Again, someone's missed the point..
Firstly, a 5850 will overclock to the same clocks a 5870 will overclock to.
A 5850 at 850/1200, and a 5870 at 850/1200, they perform the same, the 5870 has more shaders, this shows that it's limited, thus a pointless card, having owned one myself, I think it should be refreshed, maybe a higher ROP version.

yeah but you gotta think to get that 5850 to 5870 performance you need an asus or bios flash to volt mod the card hence why they bring out 5870's

if bios flashing and overvolting was outlawed then obviously a 5870 would be needed your factoring in something that not everyone does.
not everyone overclocks thats why there are so many different cards on the market that allow non overclockers to get overclocked 5850 performance by just simply buying a new card

plus drivers are still really hit and miss and cpu, mobo combos can affect a lot of stuff including FPS i never trust these bechie sites i like personal opionions

It does not matter what the performance is when clocked, should the 275 have been dropped because you can clock a 260 to the same performance? It's been like this forever, top of the range card with a few extras than the card below it.

YES CLOCK FOR CLOCK THEY MIGHT PERFORM THE SAME BUT OUT THE BOX THEY ARE NOT CLOCK FOR CLOCK ARE THEY

AND WHO THE HELL YOU THINK UR CALLING DENSE

They won't perform the same if running at the same clocks though, as the 5870 is not just a 5850 with higher clocks, its also got more Streams and TMU's

Look ,you're obviously regretting selling your 5870, and being forced to go to a cheapo alternative has left a nasty taste in your mouth so your anger is now directed at the thing you lost..;)

hopefully someone can get this point across to him

@ martini can you show me the links to these sites where it's blatently apparent they perform the same

Even so, what do you propose AMD do?
Laser off the extra working clusters of the 5870 just so they can sell them as a 5850 and make less profit?

Perhaps there is a bottleneck, perhaps clock for clock they are similar perhaps the 5890 will remedy any bottlenecks???

Can you tell me if the 5850 clocked to a 5870 clock has the same minimum FPS as it's bigger brother?

Minimum FPS the thing most people seem to neglect especailly these apparent professional benchmarking sites

not even seeing minimum FPS on a benchie/review i won't even give it the time of day

Get your 5850 to match that, though your crappy CPU could be holding you back..:p

capturezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.jpg

look 5870 spanks on the 5850's minimum fps it's on the net proven i have 3 magazines here that show the same thing if you want i'll start reeling off what the minimums are at different frame rates
